Re: Doyle Bramhall II

I like him a lot. He makes a guest appearance on the new Derek Trucks album...very nice voice.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

I agree...underrated, but perhaps due to his not putting out any new stuff.  No doubt he is respected by other musicians..plays with Clapton.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

if anyone reading this has'nt seen "Roger Waters: live in the flesh DVD" I would strongly persuade you to do so, released circa 1997?, but Doyle shines as 1 of 3 guitarists in the show...a must see...

This is why I prefer this DVD to all original (later) Pink Floyd stuff.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

Doyle is a beast.  Incredible vocalist, guitarist and songwriter.  He has put his own solo career in the backseat to play, record and tour with people like Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, Susan Tedeschi, Sheryl Crow, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu, Derek Trucks... His playing is unusual but obviously from Texas roots..after all he did get some lessons in with his dad's songwriting parter and former bandmate..a guy named Stevie Ray.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

Wow. I had one of his CD's and he didn't sound like that. I may have to try listening to him again.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

You probably either had his self-titled debut or Jellycream, where he was focused more on songwriting. But Smokestack, that stuff roars.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

DB II is a left handed mad scientist of a guitar man.  From Arc Angels right on through today.  He has a lotta soul and is a talent to be reckoned with, an unsung hero.

I believe cats like Doyle & Derek keep cats like Eric real honest.  Nobody can phone it in with them onstage.

*wipes off the dust*

I first heard and saw Doyle on the Roger Waters DVD and fell in love with his voice and guitar playing. (I apparently have a thing for distinctive voices). His solo work is absolutely great. Unfortunately I've never seen him live but would love to, one of these days.

Also, when I first listened to Derek Trucks' new album I didn't know he was on it but instantly recognized his voice. His collaborations with other artists are really impressive, I'm still surprised to find out where he's featured overall. Does anyone have his live DVD? I wonder if it's available in Europe/Germany, at least Amazon doesn't list it, bummer.

So basically Doyle brought me to the blues all the way back in 2002 and I'm glad it happened that way.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

Well, even though he's not releasing any solo material, at least he's going to be doing some stuff with the Arc Angels.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

I don't know how doyle bramhall can be called criminally underrated.  As a matter of fact the mere fact that he is rated at all puts him ina level of recognition not seen by about 90% of players that are doing similar things.  In fact I'd go as far as to say he is the single biggest name outside of john mayer, derek trucks, and MAYBE joe bonamassa in guitar music.  He has critical acclaim, the respect and admiration of his peers and even his heroes, every fan of new blues and blues/rock music knows who he is, and so do some people that aren't even into the music.  Doyle Bramhall is great, but one of the last guitarists I'd call underrated.  He books basically the sweetest gigs a young player could ever dream of.

Yeah, I would call him underrated, because as a solo artist, he hasn't gotten jack crap. And because of that, we haven't seen a recording from him since 2001. Yeah, he's gotten a lot of acclaim from playing with Clapton, but this guy should be out on his own fronting his own band, not just playing second fiddle to Clapton. He deserves that. Now, hopefully, with the resurgence of the Arc Angels, that might happen.

The difference between him and Derek Trucks, John Mayer, and Joe Bonamassa is that they have their own careers making their own music. Bramhall has not had near the acclaim doing this as they have, and that is a shame.

he wants acclaim as a solo artist he can release material as such.  You can't really feel bad for him not getting any acclaim in that way if he never releases any solo material.  To me, criminally underrated solo artist is someone who continually puts out good material and never gets any national recognition, ala lance lopez, craig erickson, stoney curtis, etc.

If he wanted to be fronted his own band this whole time, he could have been doing it.

Re: Doyle Bramhall II

Maybe because he got burned so badly the last time he did solo material. Watch Before The Music Dies.
