Topic: Ocean Pearl Drive

I know this is highly subjective and has been widely debated and discussed so I apologize in advance.

I just received a Pearl Drive pedal from Corby at Ocean EFX.  In my opinion this is the BEST OD pedal I have heard.  Smooth and sweet with more gain than a comparable Hermida Zen Drive.  Very Dumlesque tones with great articulation and dynamics.  After trying dozens of pedals looking for the perfect compliment to my Fuchs rig, I feel I have found it.

No, this isn't an advertisment.  Corby is a regular forum participant here and his products deserve recognition.  Props Corby!!

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

How much did the Pearl Drive run you?

"Music is the only thing that you can share with a million million people and you don't lose, you gain. It helps you to get energy and to live long, because when your soul is very happy then you don't want to die." - Ali Akbar Khan

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

I payed $179 for mine.  I second Danny G.  If you are looking for a high gain harmonically rich pedal this one is a safe bet. It kills Fulltone's OCD.  It is great on any clean tube amp.  I cant speak for solid state as I havent heard it on one yet. I played mine thru a Vox AC30 and a Twin.

Corby also makes a Texas Deuce which is by far my favorite overdrive pedal $189 I think. I use that pedal all the time.  Its my main lead sound.

I believe Joe uses a Pearl Drive.

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

I purchased mine privately.
Very good pedal.

I've never associated a Pearl Drive's sound with Joe...has he used it in studio at all?

Joe posted about it on the forum once. Don't know if he ever used it live or in the studio.

I just got a Pearl Drive that Im messing with right now.  It has the mid and articulation of the dumble style.  I havent been able to get it in the rig yet.  But a promising pedal....

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

I don't think it's currently in his rig. I was under the impression he had high hopes for it and was just messin with it at home. I could also be wrong.

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

Anyone have any clips of the Ocean Pearl Drive (haven't looked on youtube yet). Sometimes I get too flustered sifting through all the crap on YouTube. Any direct links would be great. I play a LP through a 100wJMP w/greenbacks. I want rich harmonics wth sustain but not too much gain. Am I asking too much? ha!
Thanks !

The Ocean stuff is definately worth looking into.

Summers.  Check out the Pearl Drive.

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

Summers...  If you dont want too much gain the Ocean EFX Texas Deuce is like a suped up TS808.  I love that pedal. If you are looking for a tighter gain with much more drive on tap the Pearl is your answer.

Bigbsmiles...  It shouldnt matter if Joe endorses these pedals. They are some of the best pedals around.  If I owned a store I'd be stocking the crap out of these pedals. Regardless of Joes use. They are at a excellent price point.  I could easily see someone who is looking for good tone who understands costs of pedals to see why these are such a great deal.
You put them up against a TS808 and not only will the sound blow the TS away but the price is less than 60 bucks more.

Even Fulltone... Fulldrives are 150ish.  The Texas Deuce is 179.  So it is a good deal.

Hi Summers,
There are some sound clips of this pedal if you scroll down. I find that pedalgeek has a good website for this sort of thing-plus its my cousins store. smile

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

Thanks, Jack... I haven't been to Pedalgeek in a while. I still have it as a favorite, though. I might buy both of them. I had bought  a Tonebone Plexitube..... yikes, what an over-rated pedal/box that is. Sold it with only a $25 loss. In case no one has tried it, the new Vox Satchurater is quite a nice little OD pedal (even though sig. pedals aren't usually much to speak of).... that is if you are kind of like me in the sense that I run an older single channel Marshall JMP and I love to keep the preamp dialed back so it clens up well. The Vox Satch is affordable and has useable features. I think I'll try the Pearl Drive after I check it out. It's  constant mix and match and the unending search for tone........Thanks gentlemen....

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

I have the OCD and I had the Pearl Drive.  The OCD and Pearl are very similar in the type of overdrive they produce.  The main difference in my mind was the level of bass.  The Fulltone is very bass heavy.  I had the tone knob all the way to the treble just to get a balanced tone.

That said,
I had no issues finding the sweet spot on the Pearl.  It is balanced perfectly.  Corby commented in an email that the OCD and the Pearl have similar types of overdrive but they are build completely different.  So keep that in mind.  They are not the same pedal.

Over all its a great pedal and you most likely will not be disapointed.

Re: Ocean Pearl Drive

Thanks for the kind words about the Pearl...last I heard, Joe wanted me to do a couple of custom mods to the pedal and it was not on his pedal board.  Haven't gotten it back from him yet, but I'm pretty sure he wants me to tweak the midrange voicing a bit to work with his rig.

Peace,

Corby
