Topic: Pickups - need some opinions

As some of you know I just picked up a Les Paul Traditional Goldtop (unable to make the numbers to get one of the JBLP's).  I also picked up a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat p-90.  I was going to replace the '57 in the Goldtop neck position with the p-90.  Now I am having second thoughts about it.  She sounds killer already.

I also have a LP Studio which I just put in the SD '59 set into.  Actually waiting to get the guitar back to hear how it sounds.  Now I am thinking that maybe I should put the p-90 in the Studio....

The third option is to give the P-90 to my guitar teacher as a christmas present.  He loves the p-90 sound.

Ok...now I need you guitar nuts to give me your opinion (that includes you Joe if you ahve a second)...what direction you think would be a good idea...

Thanks,

Barry

If you just got the guitar and like the way it sounds then why mess with it?  Sounds like a no brainer.
I have found that in most cases, I swap out pickups wanting something else...either new or different only to discover that what was in there was the best.

Nice Christmas present for your teacher!

Re: Pickups - need some opinions

Keep the Les Paul stock.  If you like the sound dont mess with it. If you dont care for the sound then experiment... but if you like it Keep it.  Also I'd hang on to the P90.  Those are great pickups. you may be able to use on something in the future.

Good luck.

Re: Pickups - need some opinions

I've used the GHS dream 90's, which is the P-90 pickup sized for humbucker. The sound is great plus no routing.
Pickups are the one thing you can keep changing in and out of your guitar. I understand Joe has gone through lots of pickups in one guitar. Just keep the original pickups handy in case you want to go back to stock.

I think the humbucker sized P-90 do a good vintage job, plus I think the neck one is reverse wound.
