Topic: Beg to differ?

Do you really have to "beg" to differ.....?

Why can't you just differ?

Hmmm

Re: Beg to differ?

I have begged for many things, but I can't remember begging to differ.
There are some very strange phrases that people repeat, without thinking very much about the actual meaning.

Re: Beg to differ?

One of the deffinitions of "beg" is to ask with all earnestness. It doesn't just mean to beg as in beg on your knees or beg for food.

So the phrase is an old polite way to say I'm going to have to disagree with you in all earnestness but I hope it's not going to be a problem betwen us.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

You don't have to worry, he is with Queen.

I don't know how you can be sick of him, it's not like his music is blaring everywhere.

I beg to differ, RiverCat. Here in the boonies, about all that reaches here on the FM band are classic rock stations. And he appears quite often with one band or another through the years he's sang. Since I don't have as wide a range of radio choices as those in more populace regions, this is what I'm stuck with. Or country/western. And I won't even get into that discussion. He's okay, I suppose, but it's time someone with another view of these songs, plus whatever new songs they may write. I wouldn't think Zep would be well served to get into the Van Halen dualing vocalist thing. But this is all speculation on my part. I just have no interest in hearing any more Paul Rogers. And that's all I wanted to express. Thanks.

I was just trying to be polite. I've always enjoyed the turn of a phrase (such as that).

This was a reply I made to the Zep lead singer thread in Other Artists where I used this phrase. Watch out... I may do it again.

I always thought that "I beg to differ" was polite, British parliament-style English for "You're talking utter bollocks."

I think you're right.......the sweet words are added for stronger opposite effect.

FYI - we'd have never thought to censor the word bollocks..... cool

Doesn't mean it would be OK Bill.....it just means we wouldn't know what the heck was going on..... not that we do now anyhow....

Re: Beg to differ?

Perhaps its actually the opposite, maybe we've become so civilized and used to being protected with the rights of free speech that we've forgotten that it wasnt that long ago in many other countries that to differ with or have an opinion contrary to those above you , that it might land you in a dark jail cell or even the loss of your life.
You may very well have had to literally 'Beg' To differ with certain people.

Re: Beg to differ?

Begging to differ is exactly like agreeing to disagree.  It's country club speech, (English Parliament) way of putting on airs, to say oh Bul**** and still appear polite and well bred.

My favorite bit of British parliament-speak is when one MP wants to call another MP a liar, something which is absolutely forbidden, so they've developed the following wonderful phrase:

"The learned gentleman is being economical with the truth."
