Topic: Live Music and Alcohol??

There was an interesting story in my newspaper today about Van Morrison and how he has ordered venue bosses to ban alcohol before and during a performance tomorrow night. He has previously complained about fans wandering around and says his shows should be about the musical experience. Van Morrison's agent his said Van is not trying to impose his own (sober) lifestyle on the audience, but to stop them going to the bar during his performance

I've read a few reviews on the forum about drunks and fights at gigs before, so I thought this might be an interesting discussion point.

My own view is that venues generally require bar takings to make a profit on live concerts and therefore if artist were to  insist on dry gigs this could backfire on them and they may find getting bookings are harder. On the other hand, it is horrible to be stuck beside drunk people, or a group where someone is continually pushing past to get to the bar. What thoughts, if any, do you have on this?

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

The artist has the ability in his performance contract or rider to require that the venue be of a certain nature.

I've seen it before where artists will not play in a "bar room" type stage.

But if the artist doesn't specify that when they sign the contract, or they aren't drawing enough to be in a venue that is not a "bar room" then it's their problem.

Most venues that have a bar in them, like you describe, certainly do need the bar to make the night's $. If it wasn't specified in advance, I'd be surprised if they were willing to do it, unless they are making some money on just the show.

As far as an opinion about alcohol being served during shows -- we don't impose our morality or our vices on anyone else.

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

I have a bias because I'm not a drinker. I also don't enjoy drunks during a show..Just my opinion. I have experienced a compromise that seems to work. The bar is open before the show, and at intermission. I don't know if it's a factor in making a show "all ages"...

Duncan...If you find out how sales were affected, please let us know. Thanks, Cathy

In this case I don't think I will, the concert is along distance from me, in Brighton on the south coast of England.

I think it partly depends on the type of venue, if it is a seated venue then I think your suggestion Cathy is correct, that bar should be open only at the start and any interval - the same as the ice cream seller would only appear at the cinema/theatre.

For a standing gig, I don't see how the artist could be concerned about crowd movement. There may be times at a standing gig I wish to get nearer the front, others when I like to take a step back, regardless of whether I am drinking. Whether I drink depends on how much I'm enjoying the gig, ie with a great act such as Joe I'd sacrifice having to drink to keep watching him play (and of course whether I have to drive home).

Just drop some acid and sit in your seat and hold on tight.

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

If the artist doesn't drink thats his/her business. But to tell the fans that pay to see the show that they can't drink during the show I think is wrong. It's the venues responsibility to stop serving patrons if they're noticeably drunk and/or causing problems.

No I don't drink. Haven't in a long long time.

Gone are the days when the artist was more stoned (sometimes) than the audience.

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

Greenose,
I have to tell you this post made me LAUGH right out loud, ironic laughter have you.  I've been listening to Van the Man since the 70's, but this scenario is like an acquaintance that used to be a chain smoker and be a totally inconsiderate smoker. (there is a difference, some smokers are conscience of non-smokers and are very polite to blow the smoke away from you etc.) When they quit, they were the other extreme, so intolerant of cigarette smoking...couldn't be anywhere near a smoker, it made them nauseous...

Anyway, Van has had his issues, made life miserable for bandmates along the way and has been rude to his fans by stalking off stage in a hissy fit after a half an hour.  Other than that, I still love his music, but I've read he's still a very moody man and not always easy to deal with...

There are 2 venues I frequent that are big old movie houses that have been refurbished. (seats about 1200)  They always have intermission to sell more alcohol, even if there is only one band playing, there's always intermission and you bring the drinks to your seat and the bar is open all night. The venue wants to make $$$ and alcohol has a big mark-up.

This observation could be because I don't get drunk, I'm just a social kinda' drinker who enjoys wine...in general people have gotten just down right rude at concerts, they talk through the show and DRINK WAY TOO MUCH!!!

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

it depends.  i think on the artist mainly.  i personally like to have a few drinks before and during the show.  it helps me loosen up, relax, let myself go and really get into the show instead of just standing and staring.  that is not to say i get blind drunk, but you wouldnt want me driving home either.  and i agree, there is nothing more annoying than an obnoxious drunk at a show.  that is what i say about artist.  at most of the shows i go to the fans have to at least be sort of big fans or very curious and interested first timers cause i rarely go to big name acts.

and yes that is brilliant.  as long as you arent bothering other people and taking away from their enjoyment one way or the other, do as you please.

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

Let me say this about that, I saw Van in 1974 and he stood behind the monitors on one side of the stage and did maybe 25 minutes of music and left leaving the crowd wondering is he gonna sing some  more? No More, worthless sack o'**## that he was. Ask Davy Knowles about him.

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

Dawg...that's right around when I saw him on the east coast, I wish you'd tipped me off, I wouldn't have wasted my hard earned money working in the kitchen of a hospital after school on 8th row seats. wink  My hubby came into contact recently with a former bandmate who had married an American.  He was in between bands and living in the states because his wife had an ill family member  The stories were just terrible about working with Van.  This former bandmate was also in the band Squeeze at one point in their different line-ups, remember this song...TEMPTED by the Fruit of Another...I love the delivery of the creative lyrics in the opening...

I bought a toothbrush, some toothpaste, a flannel for my face

Pajamas, a hairbrush, new shoes and a case.

I said to my reflection, Let's get out of this place.

Passed the church and the steeple, the laundry on the hill

Billboards and the buildings

Memories of it still keep calling

And calling

But forget it all I know I will

Tempted by the fruit of another

Tempted but the truth is discovered

What's been going on

Now that you have gone

There's no other

Back to Van-I don't mean to sound lacking in compassion about someone who may have reformed their life, but as Phil said "we don't impose our morality or our vices on anyone else."  Hey Phil, I hope all is well with you & loved ones with the passing of Ike.  Best Regards smile

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

Angela, to answer your above inquiry -- we came through the hurricane very fortunate. Roof damage, leaks, power outage for some time. Once the storm past we actually left town to await the restoration of power. We were able to get back in a couple of days and we've  already gotten our roof fixed. All safe here.

It's still crazy down here -- 1.2 million without power (gonna be a month for some), gas shortages, tough to get things, town under curfew to prevent looting.

A lot in our area not so fortuante. We'll be working with the relief efforts this weekend, as volunteers are a shortage right now.

It would be a nice repreive to take in some 'live music and alcohol' this weekend! (hope that got us back on topic enough to keep me from getting in trouble... big_smile)

Thanks for askin-

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

I think banning people from going to the bar is a bit extreme, everone should be entitled to drink if they want to. But it does annoy me when people keep moving in and out at gigs, every time coming back with a beer or whatever.. it just makes me think they can't be that interested in the artist. So I do kinda get it... but still seems a bit silly to me

I've never really had any trouble with stupidly drunk people at gigs, only ever at festivals where I guess it's to be expected, even though it really annoys when people think it's smart to throw beer all over everyone mad I just don't get it when people do stuff like that, even if they are drunk.. just.. why would you?! roll Its beyond me!

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I honestly can't remember the last time I was disturbed, bothered or annoyed by drunks at a show.

I've been to five shows in three different countries with Cathy in the last four months, ranging from the sit-down Birchmere to an outdoor amphitheater and very small bars, without experiencing or seeing the slightest bother of any kind. Maybe we just exuded such an aura of positive vibes that no pisshead came near us. big_smile

Re: Live Music and Alcohol??

I usually drink right up to showtime, so I don't have to spend time walking to the bar during the show....I spend my time walking back and forth to the men's room!
Seriously, I love to have a few drinks before showtime, but I make sure I've stopped at the latrine before the show starts and don't go anywhere.
