Topic: Which band was it?

In Joe's Blues Revue article, the producer of You & Me, Kevin Shirley was quoted as saying he wasn't as taken with the band Joe had assembled for the cd or the demos Joe had submitted. Anyone know which band was this? Eric & Kenny, or Mark & Bogie? Just curious.

I think- I could be wrong, but I think it was Kenny and Eric (not to bad-mouth them) because Joe didn't announce that he had a new band until, as I remember, early this year... so Kenny and Eric were in the band at the time of the recording... I think...

I would have to say I disagree with a number of Kevin Shirley's insights.  Joe always had great songs and Kevin Shirley sure did not add anything  in his producing or song wise.  I like alot of Joe's original songs on his other CDs better than on this CD.  Composing, band wise and producing wise.  These are only my feelings but I have to say I don't like the synthesized strings, Doug Henthorn's draining vocals (I wish the song was an instrumental).  I personally like all of Joe's other albums better than this one and the producing is one of the reason's why.  And if he was talking about Kenny and Eric he is just plain wrong.  They were a kick-ass  precision power rhythm section.

Sometimes the things people add or take away are not readily visible (audible) to someone that is not involved directly. That being said, it would be impossible to be sure what Kevin Shirley added to the production, the band, the sound, the networking (personally with Joe), the insight, the imagination, or the inspiration, since Joe had input on all of these things as well. Exceptional artists typically think different than everyone else. Their ideas spring from places that most people can't even imagine. So trying to add logic or rationale to determine the reasons "why" they did something would be a lesson in futility.

In past threads and conversations I've heard people say that this album or that album is their favorite or the best. Because of those type of statements I've tried to figure out which one I like the best as well, and I haven't been able to do it. I like them all, but I like certain songs off of certain albums better than others. So in each album there are groups of songs - the ones I like best (could come from any album), 2nd best, and last. And even those seem to change over time, so I couldn't say that because of a certain factor that album "x" is my favorite (or least favorite), whether or not that factor may be production, band or whatever.

Phil,
I agree with your statement that it's hard to pick a favorite album. Some of my favorite songs are on SILT but also some of my least favorite.

I think if you read carefully, you can pull out who Kevin Shirley was referring to. The article says that he saw Joe live in October. Later in the article it says that Shirley brought in Jason Bonham. If Jason played on You & Me, then Shirley is referring to Kenny and Eric.

It appears that Kevin Shirley was trying to get Joe out of the "hot shot, gunslinger" blues that so many other artists fall into.

Jane that's not a bad idea.  Bring a tambourine with you, or even better, a cow bell next time .  Maybe Joe can play Mississippi Queen with you jammin woman on the cowbell.  If that ever happens Jane, I want pictures wink
