Not sure its always a game.

Guarantees are in the eye of the beholder. Might be hard for a venue to book an unknown artist, with unknown results in their venue while providing a guarantee against money that might not come in.

If the artist isn't unknown, then what kind of reputation does he have? Has anyone ever heard of him? How many will buy tickets? Whats his latest CD? Did it sell? Is it on the radio?

Other than showing up to play, what does the artist bring to the table from a business standpoint?

Unless the artist could answer these questions with good answers that made sense for my business, I wouldn't provide a guarantee either. Maybe after he's played a few times and built a following, each show getting bigger, etc. Then I might offer a guarantee. Of course, at that point a guarantee might not be needed. Vicious cycle.

Surely its frustrating. You probably know a lot more about this than I do, but at the end of the day it sounds as if you want it more than the venue owner wants it. That equals no guarantee.

As a promoter you also have to be careful what artists you hitch your wagon to....a few episodes of booking "No Show" Jones (as George Jones used to be known...due to drinking/drugs) and your credibility is shot.

Just my 1.5 centavos worth (devalued 2 cents)

Yeah It's a game, you know that well if you've been doing it a while.  But you just needed to rant.  It's cool.

I do it too.  Sometimes you have to start a little smaller or deal with a set that has no problem doing biz the way you want to.

It works the other way too.  Most "artists" are so enamored with themselves, they have a poor work ethic and even less professionalism.

A lot of performers in my county hate me, because I tell 'em what to do for their money and if they don't I fire them, bad mouth them and never use them again for any reason.

Petty & vindictive???  Sure is!  But one must not mess with my reputation or my income...

The other side of that coin is pros come out of the shadows if the word is out that I have something working, cause I pay them & promote them.

As a result I don't have to play games with most backers anymore.  The fact that I'm a musician and a player doesn't hurt.  BUT...it's still strictly bidness.
