Topic: ironic... gold sparkle strat

If anyone was watching that special on VH1 Classic tonight you probably saw John Mayer's set. One of the guitars he used (on the song vultures.... I think) caught my eye. Then I noticed it was the replica of Joe's gold sparkle strat. To me it was funny, after all of the comparisons that I've heard between Joe and John... it was John that was using what is essentially Joe's guitar. Awesome show by the way... I wish Joe had been there.

Perhaps Tenacious D will break in at night and rescue it for a face-melting solo against satan in a rock-off. Then you'd have been glad Joe left it there.  lol

Re: ironic... gold sparkle strat

Speaking of which, just got John's Where The Light Is live dvd. That dude can wail. He only used the gold Strat on one song, Vultures.

Haha wow, that's funny. I love John's new stuff though, that'd definitely be a fun show to see.

Re: ironic... gold sparkle strat

Has anyone seen Gibsons sparkle finishes? They're offering both LP's and SG's with a hideous sparkle finish. Now those look like bass boats!

Fender has offered a gold or red sparkle finish since the early 60's. Special order. Sorry you feel the way you do Joe. I always liked your "Goldie".

Re: ironic... gold sparkle strat

I know theres epi's with a silver sparkle finish...

I got JM's Where The Light Is dvd at my place right now, from Netflix.

I the term "bass boat" finish. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about.

Or for that matter the finishes they're putting on the new "Gibson Robot Guitars".

Re: ironic... gold sparkle strat

actually the Strat John uses on "Vultures" isn't a gold sparkle strat at all.  It is a Fender Custom Shop Strat with a gold leaf finish (like the guitar Clapton played in the late '90's with the legends band).

Here is a pic.

Bringing an oldie back up...

Anybody know what pickups are in that Gold Sparkle strat?

(yes, the subject is "coming back up again", and yes I did a search, and yes it seems people GUESS they MIGHT be Fralins... but has Joe ever verified what they were?)
