There's really no guidelines to this, make it what you will. Start diggin' there's plenty more out there.

If they charted other songs they have other hits. Greg Kihn had a hit with "The Breakup Song" before Jeopardy even hit. The Romantics had a hit with "Talking in Your Sleep" before "What I Like about You". "What I Like about You" didn't break into the top ten.
You haven't heard or don't remember these songs but that doesn't mean they are a one hit wonder.
This is a great topic. I just hope the criteria is met more with one-hit wonders than listing established acts as one-hit wonders as this is misleading to the artist and the fans.
Come on, you 're sorta arguing against yourself. You made a good point stating that calling Free or Jimi Hendrix a one hit wonder is wrong (to which I assume everyone here will agree), but listing those artists here is not misleading to the artist OR the fans. Water seeks it's own level...if an artist/group made a name for themselves, then everybody knows it. If not, then maybe they really ARE one hit wonders.
I mentioned Jimi Hendrix in my first post "tongue in cheek", because I happened to see him high on a past list of one hit wonders. The criteria was an artist that only had one top 40 hit. Based on that, Jimi certainly qualified.
Does anybody anywhere ever have a hard time remembering who played All Along the Watchtower?? Or any other songs that artist performed? Of course not.
Nowhere in what I stated am I arguing against myself. I made my point very clearly.
It is misleading to fans and to the artist. Your minimizing the artist's music and are doing music fans a disservice by not differentiating between a band who had 1 big hit like Jimi as you referenced above and a band who is a 1 hit wonder, again wonder being the key. As with Free, giving that example as "All Right Now" fans may not look further into there music, writing them off as only a one hit wonder. Alot of U.S. fans have no idea who Free is or who Paul Kossoff is. They have no idea the influence they had.
You just stated this:
Water seeks it's own level...if an artist/group made a name for themselves, then everybody knows it. If not, then maybe they really ARE one hit wonders.
Free made a name for themselves, but not everybody knows it and there is no maybe about it, they are not a one-hit wonder.
Water seeks it's own level, not when you put it in a container. Then it seeks the container's level. And putting established album-oriented bands as a one-hit wonder is just the wrong container.
