"Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

This is a common question when people hear and see Joe for the first time. I put in the Rockaplast or NDY Live DVD's. People are amazed and want to know and hear more.

I loaned my Rockaplast DVD to a co-worker who has a 17 year old son heavily into classic rock. "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?" Was the first question he asked. Now the kid is hooked. He wants to get all his CD's now.  Yeah, a new Joe B. fan. and a young'un at that!

I loaned NDY live to my brother in Chicago. Him and his buddies sat around in stunned silence, the only thng they said is "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?". They drove from Chicago to Indy to see hsi last show, they were blown away and want more..

Again, a whole new legion of Joe B fans.

Did I do OK??

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

firin frank- You are posing a question with probably a thousand answers and enough controversial conversation to fill up a few hours... I can't tell you how many times your question has been discussed with my teens, their friends, my friends, people that I turned on to Joe saying the same thing, why haven't I heard of this guy? etc.. etc.

A couple of components- the music business is really different than when many of the classic rock bands made it, bluesrock and the blues aren't as popular a genre as previously, not being on a big record label that pays radio stations to play the music,  getting radio air time... I read an article in the paper about how baby boomers have to accept that rock n'roll is over, the genre had a good run...just look at the statistics of what wins all the music awards for the last several years...his feelings not mine.

Most importantly, Joe is gaining popularity, he's working much harder for it, because of many factors.

It's great your friend's 17 year old likes Joe, my 17 year old's favs are You and Me and ANDY!

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

Sounds like Me. I saw him open a BB King blues fest in Cleveland  and it was the question of who the H--- is this. The set  was only about a half hour to 45 minuites  but I was sold.

He has come a  long way since then. But he has surely paid his dues.

I get the same reaction when his CD's are played.  Who is this it is really good. Then you say Bonamassa and then ??????. Why don't we know about him.

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

Because commercial radio these days is a total suckfest. Either they play the same old classic rock songs you've heard a million times, or they play this new screaming cookie monster bullshit. Doesn't seem to be much in between, at least up here, anyway.

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

Luckily, my first JB concert was the NDY Live taping in Fort Wayne.  Seems like a long time ago.  Anyway, since then I've seen Joe a number of times and all were great!  But the thing is, I have taken a number of people along.  Without exception, they were simply amazed.

Now I did see him a week ago as an opening act.  I won't comment on the headliner, (the PC police here have already taken it upon themselves to bust my balls on THAT subject...)  but I can say that Joe as an opener greatly diminishes the experience.  If you're going to take someone, be sure to pick the right situation.  You'll create a new fan!

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

so, who is this joe b. you speak of, i never heard of him

I agree 100%, which is why I almost never listen to the radio anymore, at least not traditional FM commercial rock stations. They play the same 300 songs over and over, the same ones(pick 3 or 4 from each artist) they've played for the past 30 odd years, making most of them practically unlistenable anymore. The ones I still like, I already have the CD's so there's no reason to listen to them over the air. There's a plethora of bands that they COULD play, but don't for some reason. However, if a classic band comes out with a new album that's quality, they won't touch that either-go figure. Forget about any video play as well.

So, what's an artist to do these days? EXACTLY what Joe is doing, touring their asses off the old fashioned way, gaining an audience gig after gig. I firmly believe that with the right amount of exposure, there's a vast audience for Joe's music. It's just that they haven't been exposed to it YET. You have to realize that, and this may be hard to fathom to us who are heavily into music, it being a part of us, that there are multitudes that never seek out anything new on their own. There are so many artists that I have no doubt that many people, who were/are into so called 'classic rock', that grew up during that era, would dig if they're exposed to them. Publicity is the key. You can have the greatest album in the world, but it won't do anything except gather dust in the store unless people hear about it. So, keep on spreading the word!

This is exactly how I feel. First, I came to the realization about a year ago thru a conversation with my own brother, who works a ridiculous amount of hours and has no time to seek out new music and said he doesn't even know what to pick out in a record store.  He listens to the same artists, like Hendrix, the Stones, Led Zep, over and over again...Secondly, Joe has made some small steps getting radio play, but it's not enough.  I figure any station that plays SRV and KWS, would play Joe if they knew about him!

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

Our classic rock DJ said: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are on Leno tonight, so here's some Tom Petty.....and proceeded to play Free Fallin' from 1989.

Why not just get all brave and play a cut off the new album? roll

and I often ask myself, "why had i not heard of Bloodline back in the day"????????

Bloodline got some airplay around here (Youngstown, OH) in the mid-90s when it first came out, and when Joe first visited the area in 2003 to open for BB King the local paper did a big article on him & mentioned that early work.  Certainly, I liked the songs I remembered hearing from Bloodline but that sure didn't prepare me for the jaw-drop at that first Joe show!  In my happy anticipation about getting to see BB, the possibility that the 'Joe Bag o' Donuts guy' (sleep deprivation for a solid 3 months before the show rendered me unable to recall his name consistently & that one was easier:-) would play some of the best music that I ever heard!  The consensus among everyone whom I've witnessed upon first hearing or seeing Joe has been something along the lines of what Firin' Frank said.  No matter what the answer is, though, everyone has sure been happy that they finally did hear of him!

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

Blues does not get any exposure here in the midwest.U can turn on the country channel and see vidios all day and night every day. Some younger kids consider blues old fashion and want something new and reckless.I dont listen to blues radio but my brother give me a cd 2 years ago and I loved it.Some things just take awile to progress and with the blues it is going to be slow

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

I dont know about you guys but the first time i heard him, On the way home i said Bonamassa over and over again to myself hoping that i wouldnt forget before i was able to look him up. Trust me, it wasnt easy tongue

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

I shouldn't admit this. But prior to Knowing who he was I walked up to the Bonamassa T-shirt booth and asked what is a Bonamassa.   He may have even been standing there. He may  have even been the person I asked I don't remember.

Any way I now know who he is after seeing 6 or 7 shows.

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

Well, I have to admit, I have a myspace site and I have Bridge to Better Days as my song that plays as soon as you click on my site.  I also have Joe B listed in my top 4 friends (my family being the first 3).  I can't tell you how many people have asked me this very question and then how did I also get him on my friends list haha.  Oh well, all in great timing.

Love, Peace, Beatles and JOE!!!

Re: "Why Haven't I Heard Of This Guy?"

I dont know if I can add much more thats already been said. All I KNOW IS THAT AFTER DISCOVERING JOE I have wanted to turn on as many people as I can to his music.Whats it going to take? radio play ? May not happen until after he gets more well known. Maybe if he could get booked on a big tour of a classic rocker jhe would get more press. Stevie Ray didnot make it big until being dicovered by David Bowie and played on his Lets Dance album.Of course if he does make it big then we will all be complaining about paying 100 aticket and sitting in a big stadium with bad acoustics to see him.
