Joe,
Please don’t be frustrated or disgusted. Your FANS know the truth! I do not claim to personally know you, but I know what I see at your shows and through your music. That is all I need to know. No explanation required. Anyone can see that you are dedicated to your music and inspiring others through your work with the Blues Foundation. Your FANS love you for a number of reasons: your tireless effort, your desire to put on the best show, your dedication in performing even when you are sick and the dedication you have to the younger generation in helping them to understand what the blues is all about.
It seems that the past 8 weeks of touring this summer has been exhausting for you. As I have been lurking about the message boards the past four months or so, posting occasionally, there have only been three or four people that I have seen, rattling the boards. Please don’t let these three or four people determine your future. You have too many people who love you, and your music. Being a perfectionist myself, I know that if we receive even one negative comment - we take it personally. It is this perfectionist quality about you that has in turn given you such devoted fans. Your fans know that you will be on stage, playing your heart out, through heat and illness, just for us. Your desire to put on the best show possible has created a reputation that other musicians should be so lucky to have.
Unfortunately you are in the public eye, which opens you up to criticism, warranted or not. Although weird people make the world a bit more interesting, pay no attention to those who are concerned about the jeans you wear. You wear pants, and I think that is all anyone cares about. I have a personal photo I took of bluesman Rufus Thomas sporting a waist length green polyester cape over a gold studded, button down green polyester blazer with green polyester shorts and knee high boots! Ok, so if you do show up in this outfit I will post and razz you about it! LOL (Green may not be your color! HA). What you wear (to a certain extent) is not important. I think the females here on the message board would agree, you look just fine! Wink wink~
It seems that from reading interviews and seeing you in concert that you do this (your music) because it is who you are, with or without an audience. Do your thing, and we will come. Above all else, be yourself and don’t apologize for who you are. Don’t ever compromise your values. It is evident that your parents did an exceptional job of instilling good morals, values, and compassion to help shape you into who you are today. That personal quality is reflected in your music.
You should never apologize for having a tour bus. Like you said, you worked hard and you earned it. If a fan does not like paying the cost of a ticket, they don’t have to go to the concert. You are entitled to a living. The cost of a ticket to see your show is cheap compared to many. You sacrifice a normal lifestyle to bring smiles and jaw dropping awe to fans everywhere who come to see you.
As you can tell by the number of fans posting replies to yours, we wish you well, mentally and physically. Hopefully the next six weeks in Europe will bring you fresh air and good health. Maybe fans coming to concerts can bring some hand sanitizer and pass the bottle around, or have it at the meet and greet table so you don’t come in contact with so many germs!
Please look beyond the few idiots and the occasional fan who speaks before they think, in letting others know the truth. I think many would agree, the message boards are a wonderful place for fans and soon to be fans to hang out, share some stories and photos, and hear from you once in a while. We like the fact that you interact with the fans through the forum (message boards and fan photos posted on the site). Hopefully a few will not discourage you from coming back to the Midwest. We need some Joe in St. Louis, MO!
Oh, by the way, I contacted high up government officials, they agreed to put you on the endangered species list, and it is now a federal offense to hunt Joe Bonamassa! Seriously, your music is too important. Besides, I think that if you decided to quit a few fans would probably stalk you until you played again!
Be healthy and be safe. Enjoy Europe. Most of all, thanks for caring about your fans and reading the message boards!
Rhonda
