Re: Leonard Cohen

Ahhhhh.......thank you Patty, for opening this thread.

Leonard is one of my favorites.  I also adore a few people who made many of his songs famous.  These two songs rank at the very core of my short list.  About this first song......  I don't care whether it's Leonard's solo version, or Judy Collin's (which is the FIRST one I fell for - HARD), or a duet  .......  serve this one up to me, any time, any place, singularly or together...... I think it's interesting that they speak of singing it together for the first time - all night long ....... I have CERTAINLY listened to it OVER and OVER.  The two of them together - GENIUS and ANGEL.

and then, there's this brilliant piece, which is particularly poignant   -

I'm not sure which I'm most grateful for...... Leonard Cohen the songwriter, Leonard Cohen the performer, or, the cream of the crop who have covered his songs with such other-worldly perfection.  It doesn't matter - does it?  It is all a GIFT.  I feel so lucky that my life has been graced by all of it.  I am a different and more complete person because of it, of that much, I'm sure.

If there is anyone out there who doesn't know who we are talking about, I'm attaching a link to the Wikipedia article written about him:

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Popa Chubby's version of Halleluiah on the live "Big Man Big Guiar" is one of my favorite Cohen covers.

Do tell, Rev. Paul, I will check that out!
