Topic: Food Allergies

I'm tipping my cowgirl hat to country music sensation Trace Adkins.  I don't claim to be a big country music fan, but I admire that Trace is using his celebrity status to help a good cause.  I mentioned before one of my kids is deathly allergic to peanuts.  He is in very good health and their could be way worse things to deal with and he's fortunate that he does not have asthma.  The problem is, if he accidently eats peanuts, he can die, so it is always a worry, no matter how safe he tires to be.  Accidents happen because something isn't labeled properly or there is cross-contamination, like an ice cream scooper that wasn't washed properly or anything with peanut traces.  Based on my knowledge, people at highest risk have both peanut allergies and asthma.  There is a very small window of time before you have an anaphylaxis reaction and stop breathing.  The treatment is immediate administration of epinephrine in the form of an EpiPen and a trip to the emergency room.  Its likely another shot of epinephrine is needed.

"Adkins was previously a January-March 2008 contestant on NBC's The Celebrity Apprentice. Each celebrity contestant on the show was playing for money for his or her own selected charity. Adkins was playing for the Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, which provides education, advocacy and research support to families dealing with the daily nightmare of serious and/or life-threatening food allergies. The musician chose the charity because his 6-year-old daughter, Brianna, suffers from life-threatening reactions to peanuts, milk and eggs. Adkins made it to the finale as one of the two finalists."

Trace Adkins is the 2008 National Honorary Chair of FAAN's Walk for Food Allergy. (Food and Allergy Network)  He is donating the money from the performance on the Apprentice to FAAN.  If you are interested, you can download the song here from itunes.  Thanks.

Angela,
Thank you so much for sharing this information!  You know my son's situation so you know how strongly I feel about this.  I am currently doing ALL that I can to educate his school.

Re: Food Allergies

Hi Fret,
I'm sure you already know this, but FAAN has tons of educational materials for schools, the nurse's office etc. My son's school had a teacher that was peanut allergic so that helped the whole awareness issue in the cafeteria.  They had peanut-free tables, but he never sat there, kids feel like they standout.  There was just a respect factor amongst his friends, so they ate something else for lunch.  I know your son is younger, so we are in different places with some of the school issues.  Not to make light of a serious thing, but who else would have a prerequisite to kissing, except a science major with a peanut allergy....is your lipstick or lip liner (estee lauder) made with any peanut oil?  Have you eaten any peanut products recently and have you brushed your teeth?  roll Being  male and not carrying a pocketbook often leaves the epipen on his desk, which is total negligence...big concern, that's how accidents happen.
