Topic: Hey Joe - which Vox wah?

Hi Joe
my cry baby recently died so I'm in the market for a new wah. I see that you use a Vox wah. Is it the 847 or the 848 Clyde McCoy reissue?
It would be great if you could let me know. I can't find a shop near me that stocks both models so I can compare and I value your opinion.

Thanks!

I'd give you anything but my guitar and my car...

Re: Hey Joe - which Vox wah?

It's a straight up V-847... no mods or anything...

Re: Hey Joe - which Vox wah?

I'm not Joe (sadly) but I have tried both and bought the Clyde McCoy version. It's built from the original spec/parts and I thought it had more bite and range than the standard model. Joe prefers the standard model and the top end tone cut, I understand where he's coming from with it but to be honest I steer clear of stuff that cut my tone that I can't control.

Those two pedals are almost identical.   The only difference is capacitor values in certain spots, true bypass switch and a 9v switch.  Since Vox took back over production of their wah's, other things might (or will) change a bit as well.

So presumably the different cap values would effect tone?
btw any of you guys checked out the Dunlop JH-!B jimi hendrix wah?

Re: Hey Joe - which Vox wah?

I have the Chrome top/black bottom VOX wah. I had the battery bypass put in it, and shaved off the rubber stoppers to get more treble edge/distance.

Not presumably...DOES.  Besides cap values, resister values are changed a bit from version to version (or in old pedals-each ONE could be different, just depends on what was on the shelf that day)

I have an older JH-1 Thomas Design (rev E) and I have a V-847 as well.  Know what the difference is between a GCB-95 Crybaby and the JH-1?  One single capacitor.  And some stores will charge a bit for $$ for that single change and a name stamped on it.
Most Wah pedals are the same internally, the big difference being the component values and inducers.  Older ones use fasels and other 'halo' inducers.  It all depends on the sound.  I currently use my JH-1 that I've changed modded to true bypass w/LED (kept leaving it on) and changed a few other values to make it sound like a Clyde with far more sweep.  Far as tone between the pedals, it's all in what your going for and what sounds good to your ears.  I personally like Crybaby's since they have more range in stock form, but thats just an opinion.

A easier way to get some range is to adjust the toothed bar a bit for maximum range.  It's easy and doesn't cost a dime!

Check out the RMC wahs.  I hacve the RMC-4 also known as the Picture wah, and it is superb,  The RMC-2 has a bunch of adjustment knobs, but the Picture wah just has a boost pot inside.  You don't really need to adjust it, it's just perfect and Geoff Teese will give you unbelieveable service.

Yeah, those are AMAZING.

I'm about to order the Area 51 set up to replace the guts of my JH-1 that no longer 'wahs' as of yesterday.  I know the problem, i'd just rather hook it up with something crazy.
