Topic: Leeds gig review

My apologies for the delay in writing up the review of the Leeds gig but mother nature tried to get in on the act and create her own kind of noise and mayhem. Luckily everything is still in one piece.

As I explained earlier my prose will never be as eloquent as my brother Steve (Rockinhorse) but, never mind, straight onto proceedings.

There were a number of surprises to the evening, firstly Joe was on stage by 8pm – no support – did Crosby come down with the dreaded flu bug or was it intentional? Not to worry though, myself, friend Steve (who previously saw Joe at Holmfirth) and two newbies had already secured a spot from which to watch the maestro at work.

Once again Joe was in blistering form, however, it did take two or three songs for his throat to loosen up, thankfully, his cold had no adverse effects on his fret work. Joe commented that he wasn’t sure what to expect from playing at a venue called ‘the Cockpit’.

The packed crowd were soon being treated to the very special talents that are called Joe Bonamassa. The next highlight was the acoustic solo which had the Leeds crowd spellbound as he weaved his magic over those strings – move over Harry Potter, your no match for Joe and his own version of the Petronas spell.

The final surprise was the appearance of Chantel a woman, nay a mere slip of a girl. (who I first saw duet, with Joe in Sheffield last year), joining in with the final song of the night to rapturous applause from the capacity crowd.

As usual the rest of the band were on top form, many thanks to them as well for all their hard work.

Once again a good night was had by all and all I can say to end this piece is that Joe, that night, you did indeed rock Britain!

Nicely done Bro!! I wish I had been wth with you.

Technical gremlins have nibbled their desructive way on to home PC and I cannot access the Interweb. So I am risking my livelihood at work by doing this!!

My posts may be a bit limited untill I can find a suitably sized hammer with whitch to undertake the required "minor" adjustments.

Re: Leeds gig review

Good review and thanks for mentioning he started early. I'd better pick my spot early tonight just incase!

Re: Leeds gig review

Hi JD  - Thanks for the set list, I was so enthralled with gig couldn’t remember all the songs.

Good review & agree that the acoustic solo was a spell binding highlight and could probably add most of the set list to that, although my contenders to join the acoustic solo would be Just Got Paid & You Upset Me.  The duet with Chantel was gobsmackingly good, sublime call & responses interchanges & the duel lead piece was.... doubly sublime.

Did your friend, who previously saw Joe at Holmfirth, prefer this show? I was at Holmfirth and thought this was far better.

Hi Nodrog

I was at Holmfirth last year which was ace but Leeds was on another level. I thought Joe and the guys were on top form and there was a great atmosphere. Funny when the lights went out eh!

PS welcome to the forum Bonabuddy!

Re: Leeds gig review

Hi Nodrog

Following on from Tripsy's comments both myself and my friend Steve were at Holmfirth. As a venue I preferred the Picturedrome mainly because of its size and better acoustics. But I would agree that the band were probably tighter in Leeds but that comes from playing more gigs anyway.

Hell, to be honest I'd be happy for Joe to play in my front room as long as I didn't have to pay the electric bill!

Actually that's not a bad idea, any chance Joe?

Re: Leeds gig review

Hi John
Thanks for the pics. I could see my hands on a couple of them!
Did you know that Robin Trower is playin at Holmfirth in May? I haven't seen him since I saw him at the Liverpool Empire on the Victims Of The Fury tour over 25 years ago. It may be his last tour.
I agree the Picturedrome is a great venue. But if you have Joe play in your front room I might just happen to pop in for tea! Huddersfield's not far from me.

Re: Leeds gig review

Nice review John.  Nipping at the heels of that brother of yours!!!

I'd like to request an invite to that front room Joe show you'll be producing.  Miss Tripsy will be first in line, but I'll be second.

Tripsy - my hubby and I just saw Robin Trower (with Elvin Bishop on the same ticket) here about three weeks ago....my first time, so I can't tell you how he was compared to 25 years ago....but, we enjoyed him very much.

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Re: Leeds gig review

Tripsy/Libby, you'd be more than welcome to drop in should Joe ever play in my front room!!!!!!!

Tripsy further to your comment re: Robin Trower he is also playing at the Boardwalk in Sheffield supported by Aynsley Lister a rising star of the British ranks, who is also a brilliant guitarist.

If you've not heard or seen him check out his website, I'm sure you'll love his music - that goes for you as well Libby.
