hmmmmmmm            ebay?
how much are you willing to spend?

I heard the magnets in old strat pickups go bad depending on how old they are.

You don't want boutique pickups? They'd have more power and cost (probably) less...

Are you looking to sound a bit more like Joe or SRV? I went through the same thing some years ago and bought several "vintage" reissue pickups. None of them got me close to what I was after. Turns out Lace Sensor pickups were the right choice though they don't have that texas tone. Check em' out.

True. I went through a metallica phase in the mid 90's and put EMG's into my '79 Gibson Explorer. That combined with a refret made the guitar sound excellent. I can't describe how it sounds though besides full. NO extra bottom end, no extra top end....very balanced. Goes through a pedal rig or PA suprisingly well too because of the active pickups.  I don't like that they're black though.

My brother switched out his Duncan Distortions for Pearly Gates in his LP Custom and it got more mids and bang to the sound. He also put the coil tapping and phase push/pull pots in there to get even more single coil and tele 'jangle' sounds of the LP

I like your brother!

Re: vintage pickups?

Go with Fralins...Duncan Antiquitys or Lollars. Each have fantastic pickups and will bring you either the sound of Fender's 50's sound or 60's pickup sounds. Personally, I use Fralins and Lollars. I know Joe has some Duncan Antiquitys on a couple of his guitars.
