Topic: Back Door Slamin VT. 1.27

Drove 3 1/2 hrs. from Boston to S. Burlington Vt. to see the lads sunday nite.
I saw them in Boston in Nov. in front of a sparce crowd at the Middle East club.
The show in Nov. was great but Sun. was spectacular.

I saw Joe here in Nov. 06  , but never realized the Higher Ground has 2 seperate venues .
when I saw Joe he was in the ballroom which holds about 300 ppl . Back Door Slam
were in the Showcase Lounge about 100 ppl. a cozy room with a bar on one end the stage
on the other and but for a few chairs on 1 side it was standing room only.

The backing band was " Build a Machine " a trio from Boston with a heavy rockin
sound. They had played here before and the crowd was responsive. Their set
really kicked things off on a good note. When the singer asked how many people
came for " Back Door Slam" the crowd was loud and the tone was set.

The dj from the local radio station introduced the band to a enthusiastic sold-out
crowd. The lads responded with one of the finest sets I've had the pleasure to
witness. Ninety minutes of blissful guitar and soulful vocals from the trio from Man'
They played all the hits from "RolllAway" that I'd seen at the Nov. show, but also
expanded the setlist with Willie Dixons "Hoochie Coochie Man"  - Rory Gallaghers
"Goin to my Home Town"  and Robert Cray's "Back Door Slam"   Also got to see a
first when Davy who with only 5 days practice broke out a harmonica and wailed
on it during Hendrix's "Red House" which made their allready awesome cover that
much more special. Hopefully he'll keep it in the live shows !! Their soundman told
me that Davy sounded terrible on the harmonica just days before ,but had been
practicing and sounding better every day. Evan the tour manager told me before
that he was egging Davy on to play it live and that he sounded good in soundcheck
so maybe tonite would be the nite?  sooooo glad it was.

Got to see the guys after the show and they're some of the nicest guys you'll ever
meet.  Davy said that when he picked up the harmonica he got a huge shock and was
like oh nooo but it was all good from there.
Had my Joe Street Team shirt on and when I pointed it out to Davy he said
the band all love Joes music and that they really appreciate all the support Joes
fans are giving them. Ross the drummer told me his favorite was "You and Me"
but he's also diggin "Sloe Gin" Got some autographs and photos and had lots of
laughs.
It was a great nite of music in Vt, The band were on fire ,the sound was A-1 and the
crowd was controlled chaos. and Got to spread the word about Joe . Worth the drive thru a snowstorm.. I'll remember this for along time ... Thx  B.D.S.  this band   ROCKS

Re: Back Door Slamin VT. 1.27

I love this band!! Thanks Paul, I love your spirit and adventurous soul!  ..Great review! They are in Philadelphia Tuesday, the 29th at the WorldCafe..which is also a radio show, but I don't know enough to say if it will be "on air" or just a show at the club. If I wasn't leaving for Memphis (and if my Mom wasn't in the hospital), I would be there. Isn't it wonderful that they are sooo young, and have such excellent taste! I'm already a Slammer..Check out their web site. You'll find other forum friends have joined the bandwagon! lol   Cathy   www.backdoorslam.com

Re: Back Door Slamin VT. 1.27

You can't beat these guys enthusiasm, not to mention there still kinda blown away at their rising success especially here in the states. Met Evan here in SF and we talked about his Seattle roots and it turned out he used to work for my cousin as a parking valet years ago. Can't wait for them to swing through NorCal again, hopefully soon.

The show they did for WXPN is available to listen to again at

Their debut album has hit number 7 in the Billboard charts - pretty cool stuff eh? Particularly like the first track "Come Home" which they do on the above broadcast well!
