Topic: Joe Cocker

Saw Joe Cocker at Sheffield Arena last night. Sheffield is where Joe was born and raised so a little bit special.
He was in fine voice but I was a little disappointed with the band behind him. Nothing particularly wrong - all very tight and professional - but just seemed to lack something special. I think it was the guitar department which sounded a bit thin and under played.

The performance started with a few clips of Joe through the years and there was one particular clip which showed people on a plane. One of them looked like Joe B although the curtain the pix were projected onto was distorting the picture. My son also thought it looked like Joe. Anyone in Europe just seen this tour and may be able to add a comment ??

Joe Cocker delivered a superb performance but looked a little fragile on his feet - seemed to move slowly on the stage - although it didn't stop him jumping in the air in Joe fashion sometimes, so I guess he's OK.
And he did promise to come back to Sheffield...........that was the first visit in well over 10 years.

A class act and a guy I feel an affinity to.

I wish I did see that show you were talking about. I dig Joe Cocker too..since day one. My fave song by Joe is High Time We Went...was that song on the setlist? There was a time when I was walking around wity that tune in my brain....woooooeeeeeeee what a song man! smile
As for the Joe Cocker of today, I must admit I don't like his later stuff....I will be severly whipped for this, but in my op, Joe should never have sung songs like You Can Keep Your Hat On....Unchain My Heart is OK though. I know the past is the past, but there will never be another Mad Dogs and Englishmen period for Joe anymore....ahhh what great times those were!! And what to say about Joe's historical performance at Woodstock. Regarding Joe's seemingly awkward movements on stage, we all know about his syndrome I think..and he did go through a rough period what with alcohol and drugs. All in all, Joe is still an inspiration for many artists out there and I'm happy about that.

There were lots of songs sung on the night and not having a memory I can't remember lots of them but I don't recall High Time We Went but I do know the song. Unchain My Heart was played.
Highlight for me was Little Help From My Friends as I guess it was for lots of people.

BTW, I wasn't referring to his air guitar and keyboard type movements which we will all know but to him walking carefully when he left stage or came back on in the dim light - but I guess age comes to us all eventually:-(

Like our other Joe, this is an artist I would watch any time for sheer quality and legend status.

Glad to hear Joe Cocker is still performing. I've loved him from way back in the Mad Dogs and Englishmen days. Since I'd not heard anything from or about him I assume he had quietly retired.

Is he touring now or was that show a one shot deal?

Thanx Ges and have a Merry Xmas yourself. I guess Joe Cocker is getting on in age, but he is still a legend. LHFMF is a very beautiful song.

It was the end of a long European tour.
Joe retire ?? Don't think he ever will !

Sounds totally awesome Ges.  Thanks so much for sharing.  Have you seen "Across The Universe" yet?  Joe Cocker has a cameo appearance in it as 3 street characters.  It is a must-see movie.  Thanks again.    pattyluvsjoe

I recently acquired the DVD Mad Dogs & Englismen...if you're a Joe and/or Leon fan, its worth it.  It has alot of old footage in the peak of his touring days. This is embarrassing, but for the longest time and beginning when I was a teen, the word about Cocker's style (syndrome/dragster) was that he was an epileptic, which of course makes no sense if you understand epilepsy.  I'm not sure if it was an east coast rumor that just kept getting repeated...

Anyway, on sirius #74 just the other day, I heard them play Joe Cocker for the first time, Black Eyes Blue, very cool song the way Joe does it. Ges, what CD is this on? Then a conversation started about how a guy that does mainly covers and his voice is his main attribute, can make it...it comes down to the voice & delivery, surrounding yourself w/good musicians and some good luck and in this case, Cocker's voice is very unique.  He really hit it big covering the Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends" with Jimmy Page on lead guitar and Woodstock was incredible exposure. Joe Cocker's version of Dave Mason's Feelin' Alright has been is so many movies, shows, etc.

Nancy-just this past summer JB was to open for Joe Cocker in Europe, maybe Italy,  but JB was delayed in travel and Joe Cocker, being a gentleman, played before Joe. smile

Ges-how many times have you seen Cocker? Sometimes its hard to watch your idols age, it hit me real hard the last time I saw Leon. How was Summer In The City, love that song? Merry Christmas to you and yours.  smile

Angela, Black Eyes Blue is on his greatest hits CD not sure which album it first appeared on.  He always brings a smile to me when he pops on my iPod shuffle...

Hi. I don't think Joe's 'problem' could strictly be called epilepsy, but he did have something which now slips my mind. Anyway, Joe Cocker is a great artist, no doubt.
