Topic: Fake Gibsons

Be careful if you're buying a Gibson. Looks like someone is making fake ones and selling them for quite a profit. Here's the article.

Re: Fake Gibsons

there is a contradiction in this article:
"Most of our leads come from consumers," he said. "There are a lot of really bad instruments being passed off as Gibsons out there. The paint rubs off on your clothes when you take it out of the box, and they sound awful."

THEN IT SAYS:

Musemeci, 44, insists he thought he was buying legitimate Gibson guitars from a dealer who advertised a going-out-of-business sale on the Internet.

"I've been playing guitar for years and I couldn't tell the difference," Musemeci said after his arrest. "They looked right, they sounded right, they felt right."

You obviously wouldnt buy a guitar that sounds bad.  I have personally seen counterfeit guitars (modestly priced and labeled as 'lawsuit' guitars) that sound good. One I could barely tell the difference, but after pointing out some small innacuracies, I was like "oh yeah, this CANT be a Gibson." Fun novelty if anything to fool people. Furthermore, it would probably be easier to make a Fender fake than a Gibson, for whatever that's worth...
