Topic: Joe's Doobie Brother Fan

I caught Joe's show in Santa Cruz last night, since any excuse will due for a trip to Surf City and Joe's my best one right now. Anyhow I walked in the club about an hour before show time and looked around for familiar faces. Lo and behold the first face I recognize is Tiran Porter who played bass for the Doobie Bros. for 20 some years. I'm momentarily starstruck, but as soon it passes I introduce myself and Tiran intros me to himself and his lady friend. We exchange pleasantries and I naturally ask if he's doin' anything musically lately. Then I have to ask, you're a fan of Joe? This is where I almost fall over as Tiran tells me he's known of Joe for many years, like talkin' about teenage years, but this is his first chance to see him live and the man is GIDDY with anticipation. I keep checkin' back with him periodically and he assumes I must know Joe and says he's dyin' to meet him. My only response was Mr. Porter consider it done. During Joe's acoustic tunes I run out to the side stage door and grab Carmine and tell him who's in the crowd and he tells me to not let him get away without he and Joe sayin' hi. After the show raps I bring Tiran out to wait with me for the guys to cool down and Bogie's the first one out the door. Before I can finish sayin' Bogie this is, he's goin' I know damn well who this is! Bogie was floatin' tellin' Tiran about catchin' The Doob's every time they came through Raleigh in his younger days. Finally Carmine comes out and everybody wanders back in after the club clears out and the quickest hour flies by while Joe and Tiran enjoy a long musical chat. It was a great nightcap to a great evening for all involved. If you're curious, Tiran plays in a band called The White Album Ensemble which plays nothing but pure Beatles and includes shows with the Santa Cruz Symphony as accompaniment. Needless to say I'll be checkin' this act out.

OK here's the story, of course I took advantage of this Kodak moment, however Shred was operating the camera and I'd already taken the keys away from him at this point. This morning after breakfast I ask him to snap a shot of me out on the pier in Santa Cruz with the Beach Boardwalk on shore behind me while I'm on the phone with none other than Bonametal herself. So I ask how'd that one turn out and Shred says dude I think the card might be full or somethin'. I just got off the phone with him on his way to Modesto and the photo op is all at mystery status as we speak. I wish we had film of the taco storm at 2 am in our room at Feather Falls, that was one for the ages!!!

Hey Jane,

That's a great picture of the boys at the bar! But I've got a question, HOW COME I DON'T HAVE IT IN MY MAIL BASKET? Shred, I'm looking for an explanation buddy.

Roy

Roy, I got to apologize to you, I'll look back on my list of the people I sent this to, and if I missed yourself and a others, then my bad! If you really want to know, I had a major league hangover, when I sent the emails out to my forum friends ( yeah I know people, to much info!). Anyways, it was a bizarre week, 5 shows in 9 days, definetly a music highlite in my life. And then the worst week of my life, completetly unrelated to this forum. Just cant share it with you, sorry bud. Anyways thats my story!

Re: Joe's Doobie Brother Fan

ohiodawg-cool story...I think California and New York are probably the most likely US places for someone famous (like an actor who plays guitar or someone from a popular  band) to show up at a Joe concert.  I don't think we'll be totally surprised if this happens more and more, even in the UK. smile

This is the link to the band, I haven't met a Beatle cover band yet I didn't like!
