Re: This is pretty cool
I think I saw 15 clones of that kid in Guitar Center yesterday...they weren't buying, just taking up amps for those of us with money to spend...
Re: This is pretty cool
Yeah, I didn't care for that style much either. This kid's a little closer to the style I like. He's a little older though: 12.

I don't know what guitar center you walk in to but there isn't 15 kids in the USA that can play like that. I don't care for the style but he did all that and looked like he was watching cartoons. A freakin machine. Souless true but come on the kid can shred.

Sure there are 15 kids that can play like that...I was being sarcastic about the little shredders who go to guitar center to play, not buy. I saw/heard at least 3 kids(13-17) who were shredding madly. Atlanta guitar center
Re: This is pretty cool
It bothers me when I see kids that good that young. They should be outside playing not locked in a room running scales. I bet those kids have no social skills at all.
And please spare me the “Joe was that good when he was 12”
Re: This is pretty cool
I'm just glad to see kids learning music! I think it's incredible what they're doing at their ages. The "soul" will come with age and maturity, but for now, these kids are very impressive!

Your probably right. I play and im 13. I mean, I would rather be jammin with the band I play with every weekend then to go off to the mall or something with my friends. But, you know this is how all the greats got where they are today. I love playing my guitar and I practice everyday. I can't help it. It's just so fun to me. My friends do get mad every once and a while though, when I blow them off to go play in a bar somewhere. They do understand though. But, some of my friends like it and wish that they could play guitar. ha. But, I think that more and more kids need to get into the blues. We need to keep the blues alive!!!!!!!!!!

How else are you going to get that good? I'm sure Joe did the same thing. And I'll bet you someone that saw Joe at 12 will tell you that he was as good.
Re: This is pretty cool
Better they be locked up in a room doing scales than out getting drunk or getting involved with drugs. Social skills are much easier to learn guitar. Plus, if they get good enough, they won't need social skills. The girls will come to them. Or, in the case of any punk band, they won't have to be that good period. lol

Re: This is pretty cool
We get in a lot of discussions of this sort with our friends, only mostly related to sports. Our son is devoted to baseball and puts a great deal of time into practice and camps, etc, but he absolutely loves it and shows true talent. We are always quick to mention that we never push him to do more than he wants to do, but we see some kids who don't look like they really want to be playing, but the parents force it. I think you have to be able to "read" the kid and let them go as far as they're comfortable with. That's the way LD's mom said they handle his talent.

Re: This is pretty cool
Gotta agree with Deezer on this one. I spent alot of time in my room at 12-13-14 but not enough when I started hitting 15 and up. I spent too much time smoking, drinking and not so good things. If I had spent that time practicing...................anyway, these kids can help us all learn and gives me incentive to practice.
Re: This is pretty cool
My comment was more about being a kid and getting outside in addition to playing. I was a in a rink for the past 25 years of my life and I have no social skills haha. D’oh!
Re: This is pretty cool
Got a little off the original topic here, but being a teacher and parent, the sub-topic interests me. It really can go too far in the wrong direction either way. I wished I had spent less time focusing on my social life, and more time on the music I loved, but I was too busy trying to be "cool". I'm glad my son is dedicated to a hobby he really loves. I never had that drive. I'm also glad he's a well-rounded kid and has lots of interests and does well in school. He knows he can't put all his "eggs in one basket".

Re: This is pretty cool
I think you need to guide kids towards positive things and let them choose what interests them and to what level. My daughters played soccer for one season (didn't like it), basketball (didn't like it), older daughter made red belt in tae kwon do (liked it for awhile), band, poms, etc. They never liked something enough to dedicate all their time for years and years. That is typical. Kids that find something they love and want to do every minute are unique and there's nothing wrong with that, unless they're gymnasts or figure skaters...just kidding. Waht's wrong is if the parents are pressuring them to do something they have limited or no interest in.

I agree, some kids are practising the piano (just an example) all day, only to please their parents! but somehow I don't think they could get very good if they were pressed to do it, especially if they play the blues!
Re: This is pretty cool
I have fun playing my guitar. Im so glad that I don't have parents that push me into doing things. My dad is right there with me the whole entire time, because we both just love the same music and it's very fun to hang out with him and do the things that I love doing. He loves to watch me play guitar too. We go to concerts together all the time. And he takes me into like bars and clubs (only so I can play guitar there) and many parents that I know would never do that with their kid. Like this one guy thinks that taking me into a bar to play guitar is rediculous, but others think its awesome that we both love the same thing and we are doing it together. and it is actually a good experience for me. I see all these stupid drunk people acting all wasted and that makes me not want to do all that. So I have learned alot in the past year. I love it. I have a social life too though. Well, thats my oppinion...i got a little bit off topic but, oh well.
Peace,
Sarah

Re: This is pretty cool
i think it really helps to have parental encouragement. Look at Joe B's dad - owning a guitar shop and everything. It was an incubator for a guitar prodigy in Joe.
There is a point these days where I believe parents go too far.
