Topic: A sad day. Rush is done.

Neal Pert can no longer tour. He is physically incapable of the rigors of the road. Alex Lifeson said the R-40 tour tore him up with physical pain in his joints. Neal says if he can't go 100%, he won't play at all .
One of my all time favorite bands. Sigh.

It sucks, getting old.

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

Devastating news.... My idols growing up, they have guided me through the last 35 years... First time I saw them was ar Hammy Odeon in 1980, and 14 shows later, including the Band's 12 year hiatus from the UK, seems that the CA tour will have been the last, admittedly I did wonder the same at the time but still so hard to take...

Your music will last an eternity, Alex, Gedyy and Neil, absolute LEGENDS

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

From an article on CoS..... Glimmer of hope at the end....

Rush billed last year’s “R40 Tour” as their last full-scale outing, a notion which was emphasized when drummer Neil Peart all but announced his retirement in an interview with Drumhead Magazine last December.

“… Lately Olivia has been introducing me to new friends at school as ‘My dad– He’s a retired drummer.’ True to say–funny to hear,” Peart said at the time. “And it does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to… take yourself out of the game. I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It’ (‘Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it’).”

Now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Peart’s Rush bandmate Alex Lifeson has confirmed the band’s retirement from the road. While he and Geddy Lee would like to continue touring, Lifeson said Peart is no longer physically capable of participating in such extended outings.

“He didn’t even want to do the [R40 Tour], to be honest with you,” Lifeson explained. “It’s been increasingly difficult for him, but he committed to the tour and we got through it. As far as he was concerned, that was the end of touring.”

“His shoulders were hurting, his arms were hurting, his elbows, his feet, everything,” Lifeson added of Peart. “He didn’t want to play anything less than 100 percent. He was finding it increasingly difficult to hit that mark on this last tour. So, all those things combined, I get it. I’m disappointed and I think Geddy [Lee] is very disappointed and we’d love to continue this tour a little bit longer, but we’re off now.”

Lifeson would not close the door on Rush entirely, however, saying it’s possible they could still record music or play a one-off show together.

When life gives you lemons; don't make lemonade.
Give back the lemons.  Why were the lemons free?  What's wrong with the lemons?
Do Not trust the lemons...

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

It's something you don't think about much. But I can imagine drumming being very hard on the body after so many years
Makes me think of BB King.Aaw him a few years ago and he could only play a short amount and then would shake his hand.Could tell he was in pain.

Your rock candy baby
Your hard sweet and sticky

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

of course Alex Lifeson is battling arthritis in the hands as well.. I will be interesting when he hangs up the guitar too.

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

Difficult as it is....we have to be unselfish. All these guys never thought they would have a 40 year  plus career. Whilst it might not be as taxing as hacking coal out of a seam for 40 years, given what they expend during a show it probably is not far off!

The sheer repitition of doing it day in day out takes a massive toll. Add in the travelling and so on and I can see that if they have enough to live comfortably then stop before the memories sour.

Peart makes it look so easy and yet his massively technical style must be enormously stressful on the body. I saw on another site a drummer stated that "Peart could help himself by altering his style...snare too high, toms too flat, seating position too low"..........wtf......get a life. It's 40 years of toil!

I'm pleased for them. They have left us a magnificent legacy of music and memories. I only saw them twice on 'All the Worlds A Stage' and 'R30'. Simply brilliant.

The sun will never set on the music they've made. Peart gave a great deal to his musical career and he's had his highs and very low lows. Time for him to enjoy the fruits of his labours.

I can only say.........thank you.

No Hits, No Hype.......................Classic Rock Jan 2012

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

I think it's easy to be unselfish in this light, bravo for Neil knowing when to walk away from it, same as Peyton Manning this week.
I consider him to be the greatest rock drummer ever, I would not want to pay to see them if he is not 100%. I had hoped to see them one more time, but knew in my heart that this was inevitable. Oh just think about all of the music they have given us through the years, I own the entire catalog and including the "bootleg" Mirrors two disc set from the Oakland Coliseum in the 90s.
I was fortunate to see them 3 times....opening night of the Counterparts tour in Pensacola FL, R30 tour in Atlanta, and Snakes & Arrows tour in New Orleans. R30 stands out as one of the best outdoor concerts I have ever attended. Snakes & Arrows was great as well but will always stand out because of the monstrous bloody marys served at the Superdome Arena.....mostly a salad in a cup, not much booze at all.
So I won't shed a tear, it happened exactly when it was supposed to happen. I will however hope for some more studio work, and maybe some solo work from Geddy and Lerxst.

As corn through a goose, so are the days of our lives

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

Happy I got to see them at least 25 times....:)

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

About eight more than me then.
I got to see them in 7 different countries, including a hometown YYZ show. Only wish I'd seen them more than once in the 70s.

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

Meg White is taking Peart's place!

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

When the R40 concert was rumored and I thought that this would be the last tour. I am so glad that I got to see them one last time. I am trying my best to see all of my favorite artists when they tour because this may be "it" for many of them. I am seeing David Gilmour on March 24 at the Hollywood Bowl and I just got Paul McCartney tickets for April 13 here in Fresno. Saw U2 last summer and the Eagles in 2014 (thankfully). I have never seen Tom Petty and the Heartbeakers (a shame I know), so I hope they tour soon. What are some other older bands/artists you'd want to see?

I can still remember the first time I heard The Spirit of Radio opening riff and I was blown away! This was my first time I heard of Rush. My friends and I bought there older music and fell in love with them. I only got to see them twice (Power Windows and R40).

Thank you Rush for 40+ years of excellent music!

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

I still want to see U2, Elton John, and Metallica. Those are the top 3 of people I haven't seen live yet.

Re: A sad day. Rush is done.

Sad indeed......after my 25 shows since '85...that's it for the guys from the great white north:(  Lucky enough to catch them twice last summer......Amazingly I was able to see the Canadian icons twice for what it costs to see Joe B once......my final concert score:
Rush 25
Joe 17
