The Verve Pipe: Spoonful Of Sugar.  A little late to the dance but a great band nonetheless.

Hey Curby - good to see you back in the land of the postin'

By any chance have you heard of British guy Danny Worsnop? usually screams his lungs out in metal bands, but took a while to confront some personal demons and came out with a Country tinged solo album (Long Road Home). May appeal to you:-

He's gotten favorable reviews except his hardcore metal followers.  Those two songs are both good.

Check out Chris Hillman's new album.  He's backed by Tom Petty's band and TP produced the album.

been going a bit "proggy" of late; working through the solo back-catalogue of Steven Wilson and then a gem landed on the doormat - Tangerine Dream - Quantum Gate; great eulogy to Edgar Froese and to celebrate 50 years of Tangerine Dream.

New album "Truth" - first one with keyboards.

Thanks for the heads up on the release Kenny - didn't realise it was due.  Order placed.

Digital copies out now Mike - only 10 songs, 34 minutes but it is fantastic. Totally different from his other ones and his vocals are so much better - you will hear for yourself.

Well, this is a much anticipated album from Laurence; first one for his new American release label and his first one with dedicated keyboards under the hands of Bennett Holland. What I at least didn’t anticipate though, its a “pop” album!?!

Ten tracks coming in at change under 34 minutes, it’s a small, but perfectly formed album with three tracks just about qualifying for Eurovision entry (on the 3 minute mark or less) and only two tracks troubling the 4 minute mark. I don’t think that Sony are already trusting their new boy on a vinyl release, which is my usual grumble about “short” albums, I get the feeling from the polish of the tracks presented that there’s air play in mind, certainly their timings are radio friendly. There’s also evidence out there that with downloads being so popular, the average user/downloader hasn’t the patience with long introductions building the song and they consider solos boring; maybe that’s been a factor. For the latter, that’s their loss since we know how good LJ is on guitar and now with added BH…

Still, “Mr Grumpy” aside, the songs are very well constructed, like vintage 1960s chart music; the band are absolutely water tight. Bennett Holland’s keyboards are everything we’d expect, flowing, melodic and totally apace with LJ’s guitar.  What’s really standing out on album #5 though are Laurence’s vocals. This is where he’s reaching maturity; how much of that is down to coach Guianko Gomez or producer Gregory Elias I can’t say, but it’s the biggest jump LJ has made since his 1st RUF record.

Not really much point in a track-by-track dissection; brief as the majority are, there’s not a wasted or superfluous moment in any of them.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Jack J Hutchinson’s Boom Boom Band - Set Your Heart For The Sun

Hmm, Jack J.in band mode then; so that’ll be Jim Brazendale on the drums and Rick Baxendale on bass (and everything else) with Tom Brundage guesting on harmonica.

I don’t know if its a factor or just a coincidence but Jack J does have more than a passing resemblance to the late John Bonham;
the opening track Love Is Going To Bring You Down is a crunchy, ballsy number and then Boom! rocks up to it’s name. Switching mid game, Hey Hey Hey provides an acoustic “sing-a-long”  interlude with a well phrased electric guitar break. Plugging back in, we get the chugging rocker Get It Back and my album favourite Fight Fire With Fire with it’s Faces style opening riff. Then we slow down again for the7 minute sprawling, near psychedelic Lone Dreamer/Hidden Dream. In what appears a recurring pattern, we rock back up again with Souled Out and the slightly funkier Look In The Mirror, maybe tapping into some Black Crowes here. Then along comes another highpoint to the album, The River Cries; building from an acoustic start with some very tasty swirls of slide interspersing. With a walking bass line, Loving Man is a pure Blues number justifying Jack J’s credentials and Jezebel well, ladies don’t swagger do they, they strut, and this lady struts. Again, another acoustic “sing-a-long” (and I don’t mean that disparagingly) Long Time Coming leads us into the aptly titled Wake Up which is another chugging, gnarly rocker which plays out in a storm of fazed guitars.

A cracker of an album that alternates between the acoustic and all out rock with equal aplomb. A few rough edges and occasionally the piano does get in the way but you still want to hit the “Repeat” at the end.

Curby; if you haven't come across this already, it may interest you: The Rails - Other People.

The Rails are an English singer/songwriter duo; Kami Thompson, daughter of Richard & Linda Thompson and James Welbourne from The Pretenders (The Pogues and sometime backs Ray Davies). Some very tasty, old-school folk/rock. They've worked together 5 or 6 years now. (Only other album is 2014's Fair Warning, so be careful looking for back catalogue as there's an earlier band with the same name.)

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Mike, yes, I'm aware of those two.  Kami sounds almost as good as her brother Teddy and James is a very prolific guitarist.  Will investigate that band.

Today I've been listening to Jet's album Get Born.  Music styles all over the place.  From Billy Preston playing electric piano on a Stones vibe to A very Beatlesesque ditty.  One of those long drive country road albums.

Red Butler - Acoustic E.P.

After the very positive comments the guys have been getting since Dan Spellman stepping up as new vocalist, Alex, Mike & Charlie taken the first opportunity to get into a studio and lay down a few numbers; they're own Calm Before The Storm and a take on fellow Uckfieldian Rag'n'Bone Man's Human which have been tour staples through the year, as well as a couple of new tracks.

Great little set showing the guys have a depth and versatility to be mined.
