Topic: JB Fan Safari thread

Hi All
Lets start a fan gear safari thread. Attached are items I found locally in NH. A dear friend of mine Gary Hoey is helping out a widow to sell her gear from her late husband. This is how Gary rolls. Gotta love it. Anyway attached are what I purchased.
share your safari adventures with us all big or small. We all love gear so lets see what you found.

But my adventures pale in comparison and my bank account is keeping the Gas down

But there are many others here that buy enough gear to maybe give you and Gary a run for the money

This was my safari tale for when I got my JB Les Paul and the Marshall half stack I play it through...nothing like a Joe safari but it was my little safari and it means something to me


I'm a crane operator, the mobile kind.  The crane is mounted on a "truck like" unit, I travel with it from job to job as needed.  So I get to travel with it a bit, rarely more than 3-4 hours from home though.  In my travels with it I have only ever come across one guitar store that I actually had room to park it so I could go in to see what they had.  So one day when I was in that town, I had some time to stop in (Summerside, PEI).  Like many of you, I was just going in to see what they had.  I was not looking for anything specific.  But there it was, Joe!  Hanging on the wall.  It caught my eye almost instantly when I walked in, but just so you know...this store is not very big.  You could see almost everything they had from the entrance. 

The guitar was used.  Not much though, well taken care of.  Included the case and some of the case candy.  It's a Gibson Les Paul Studio and it was in my affordability range.  We're talking several hundred less than a new one.  At the time a new one listed, locally and in Canadian dollars, $1400.  I had a big problem though, it didn't matter how much I liked it or what the price was-I was driving my crane!  There is barely enough room for my lunch can in that thing! 

My job with the crane was waiting for me, I had to go, without the guitar.  When I got back home a couple of days later, I contacted the store to see what we could do.  I could drive there, but it was a couple of hours away plus a bridge toll (Confederation Bridge) and their hours were not the greatest for someone who works my hours.  But...they were affiliated with a local store and agreed to ship it to them if I agreed to their asking price.  I could pick it up there.  Saves me 3-4 hours driving and $100+ in fuel and tolls.  Done.  It now has a new loving family, a Joe Bonamassa set-up (which I quite like) and a Joe Bonamassa signature.

As for the Marshall...

Yet another trip to PEI (Prince Edward Island) this time to Charlottetown.  My crane was on a job site this time and I fortunately had a rental for transportation.  Once again I hit all the guitar stores I could find, small towns so there are not many.  One had this used Marshall half stack.   The cabinet was a 1960 Lead and the head unit was a SS MG100 HDFX.  No tubes, but I could live with that since I have a nice 2x12 tube amp at home already and the price was reflective of the lack of tubes. 

But if I buy it, how to get it home?  I told the guy I would take it, but only if he could get it into the trunk of my rental!  How about that!  It fit!  With no room to spare.  And it sounds great.


First song I played through my new rig was Django.

I'm definitely a gear head, but I'm still learning to play. So if you consider the gear I have compared with my meager skills, I'm definitely in the "more than I need" camp. I don't have anything vintage or especially unique, though one amp scores high on overkill.

While in the bay area on business, I went to check out some local stores. I went to Gryphon Stringed Instruments if nothing else to get my son Griffin a t-shirt with the beast he's named after on the front. :-) https://shop.gryphonstrings.com/product … _id=115171 It was a nice shop, very low key, but mostly acoustic focused. They did have a Rickenbacker 360/12 that Griffin told me we needed (I texted a picture), but I resisted.

Then I visited Guitar Showcase http://www.guitarshowcase.com Guitar Showcase is a great store to check out a slew of different items. A fairly large area of new guitars, an upstairs filled with acoustics, the showcase with vintage and otherwise pricey instruments. While there, I sent my wife a picture of a Jimi Hendrix commemorative full Marshall stack, and joked that it was good that I couldn't check it onto my flight. She's good natured about me getting a couple more guitars than I really needed. They were (almost) all deals I couldn't pass up. :-)

A couple of weeks later, a stack just like the one I saw came up on eBay. It went with no bids, was relisted, no bids. Eventually I emailed the seller and said I was interested, but could only justify a price a fair bit lower than his reserve. We made a deal, and now I have a crazy loud amp and still can't play. Griffin can though, so it will get used. The room it's in is carpeted, and it's so tall, I feared the soft carpet would let it tip over, so it's only running one cabinet. I finally picked up a hotplate on TGP. I haven't had time to try it yet, but I'm looking forward to hearing Griffin play through it with the tubes cooking.

Ok I'll play.
my last "big" safari was when I was looking at getting a Les Paul.
Just like everyone going into store after store (multiple times) waiting for one to Jump off the shelf at me.
I was just finishing up Footloose stage musical production and was exhausted by a difficult director; boring stuff like how to fly in doors and window and church cross in-between all the drops,, theatre stuff plus a cast of 40 + crew of 20.
and pulling off my 24/7 IT job.
exhausted is what I was.

Walked into the store and "lowered" my choice from a $2500 standard LP to looking at $1500 studio's.
I was checking out a studio fire-burst when the clerk said we just got this 2001 Studio in Desert Burst with A+ top in for $900.
hmm .. see some nice flames at the right angle.

less than 3 months after picking up that "used" LP that was gigg'd for some time, I won a set of seats and a meet'n'greet with the one and only Joe B.
Of course I had to bring Joe the customary box of 'gold fish' treats and a bottle of Red wine in trade for his "Life Time" guaranteed signature on the TRC and back of headstock.
Hence my avatar.

this guitar has now had the Joe B-Seymour Duncan pickups put in and the pots changed to 550k RS Pots.. but it's still my LP.. Now sort of call " Joe."

The hunt in stores never ends... till the next one jumps at me

Great story Doug, and a great price on that LP

My Safari search was not turning up anything that suited me. I went to at least six stores, but didn't find what I was looking for, used would be acceptable, but I wanted a nice top and good clean condition. After missing the boat on the Skinnerburst, I decided to expand my search to include the Gibson Custom Shop R9 Lemonburst.  Well last week my patience was running out, and GAS was taking over, and I started looking at online Gibson dealers. I found one I really liked, contacted the store, and pulled the trigger. My first Custom Shop LP is now on the way, you only live once....

Yeah, you've never heard a beginner fumble through scales until you've heard it through 100 watts of pure tube tone! :-)

I'm only using the slant cab right now. I might buy another (lower powered) amp head so my son and I can get completely ridiculous simultaneously. Fortunately that JB100 on eBay sold, so there's no risk of me buying that. (There was none anyway, since I've been good at limiting silly purchases to great deals, so in theory I can resell.  :)

I will participate and Share a couple gear safari stories.

I have been playing guitar since I was a kid.  I started taking lessons when I was 8 years old and have never stopped playing.  I am 42 years old now.  When I was 10 years old I had an uncle who would go to estate sales all the time and buy tons of stuff.  One weekend he invited me and my Dad to go along with him to a sale.  At this point I had been playing guitar for a couple years but was still very young and still very green.  While at this estate sale we came across an old beat-up black guitar.  It was priced at $100.  I didn’t recognize the brand ( my knowledge at that time basically consisted of fender and Gibson).  In any case, my uncle decided I needed to have this guitar.  He bought a ton of stuff and as a result was ultimately able to negotiate the price down to $50 on the guitar.  I took it home and tried to play it.  It wouldn’t stay in tune at all and I basically deemed it a piece of crap.  It mostly just sat tucked away in my closet for years.  It was many years later that I pulled it out, did some research, and realized it is a 1965 Gretsch Country Gentleman.  The guitar was in really bad shape.  The neck was ruined and some other issues.  I have since had the guitar restored and I still play it to this day.  It’s my only vintage guitar I own and holds a very special place for me because of the connection to my uncle.

My second story is around a Paul Reed Smith Artist package Singlecut guitar I own.  For many years I had lusted after a PRS singlecut and had not been able to afford one.  As many of you know Gibson ended up suing PRS regarding the singlecut model saying it too closely resembled the Les Paul.  I had spent many hours at my local guitar shop playing the singlecuts and the owner knew I wanted one badly.  When the lawsuit was announced PRS had to stop all production on these guitars.  The shop owner called to let me know what was going on and indicated if I really wanted one I needed to move quick as it didn’t look good for them to be able to keep producing them and what he had in stock was all he was going to be able to get.  So, I sold a bunch of gear scrounged up all the money I could, and the shop owner was gracious enough to work with me to give me a great deal because he knew how badly I wanted one.  The day came for me to go buy the guitar.  They had 5 Artist Package Singlecuts in stock.  All incredibly nice.  Same guitar obviously but slightly different weights and finishes.  I literally spent about 2 hours playing them all and trying to narrow it down to the one I wanted to buy.  I finally decided on the one I wanted to purchase.  The owner in jest asked me if I was sure.  I said…I think so but you better get these others out of here before I start playing them all again.  He took the other guitars away and indicated he was going to go get the paperwork started.  He told me to go through the case and make sure all the case candy was in there that the guitar is supposed to come with including the hang tag from PRS.  This is the tag they include with each guitar that has all the basic info about the guitar.  I pull out the tag and am reading through and stop completely stunned.  The Guitar had been completed on my birthday of that year.  I was literally floored.  The owner didn’t believe me.  I had to show him my driver’s license to prove it.  We both stood there in silence for a couple minutes and he finally said….”that guitar chose you…it is absolutely meant to be yours”.  Still gives me chills just thinking back to it.  It’s still my #1 guitar and there is just something incredibly special about the connection I have with that instrument.
