Topic: Joe's stage "JB" rugs....

Rumor has it a fan makes them for him.....anyone know who? Joncbyrd@hotmail.com if you might know. I suggested it to the merchandise store....it would be a cool thing to have I think.

Re: Joe's stage "JB" rugs....

Indeed! I could use a nice rug.

Jon, super idea for the store!

It would be fun to redecorate my living room around that rug.

That rug really tied the stage together, did it not?

I have a small music/sitting room I'm doing upstairs, and it would be perfect. It also doesn't hurt that my initials happen to be J.B.. smile

Re: Joe's stage "JB" rugs....

I asked Joe about the rugs once, he said they were custom made for him by someone in CA?  As I recall, not a cheap piece of carpet.

I thought it would be cool to market a smaller version guys could take on gigs with them?? Maybe a 4x6 replica of sorts?  I'd buy the first!!

Re: Joe's stage "JB" rugs....

I'd get one for the music room - bit ONLY if they are designed using a special material that DOESN'T suck your dropped plectrums into the mystery pick sucking space wormhole to another dimension...

But on a more serious note - I notice that a lot of musicians use a rug on stage, and I was wondering as to the practical aspects of them:
* Do they reduce the chance of mic shock from improperly wired rigs, due to the fact that the carpet can act as a ground insulator?
* Do they prevent your pedalboard from slipping around a smooth stage floor?
* Do they absorb some of the sound from your amps behind you and prevent ground reflections from blasting your ears?

I think they just "look cool", mostly.  But certainly better traction than a wooden floor.

I've used a small one. It hides all the cords going from you amp to you pedals and mic's so you dont trip all over them. And it makes it easier on your feet to stand in 1 place for an hour or more to play music. Those where the 2 benefits I found!

Re: Joe's stage "JB" rugs....

I'm not in the league of Nick or Devan in playing or gig's.. but here's my story:

Wife washed a bath matt and it was in the way of something I was doing in the laundry area, so I tossed it over my couch in my basement rec-room and didn't think anything about it.

Later I was working on my set list and didn't you know that small 2x3" bath matt was in front of my music stand. So an hour into practice, I'm thinking to my self.. My feet aren't sore..
DOH! of course not, I'm standing on a matt that's on top of my granite tiled basement floor.
needless to say, I won't play without a matt down now.

Re: Joe's stage "JB" rugs....

It seems that Clapton has said that his stopped him getting static shocks from the mike stand.

I cant see a rug stopping a shock from faulty gear.

Re: Joe's stage "JB" rugs....

I love the rug.  To me it "warms" up the stage.  As for shocks, I would think that a rug increases the chance of a shock, it always did when I was a kid!

Indeed. If the rug is synthetic, it can just make the things worse.

If you mean static electricity, then that is true, but different from an actual mic shock I would think.  The static shock you get from stepping off a rug or touching a door knob is just the static charge built up on the other item that is letting itself go to 'ground' through YOU.

Similarly, I would expect a poorly grounded mic would try and do the same thing.  HOWEVER, if you are standing on a rubber backed (or any non conductive material) carpet or rug, then essentially you are insulated from ground, therefore I would think you wouldn't get the current traversing through your body if you touched an improperly grounded mic??  I am not an electrical engineer, so I am just theorising here - others could prove me totally off base.
