Topic: Taj Mahal Trio
I did a search and came up empty so I'll post this.
We went to hear Taj, one of those old time artists on my must see list, last night at the Belly Up with a loving crowd filling the place. All there just as I was to see this great man play and sing.
He's still got it going on in a big way. He plays seated on a high bar stool, but with animation and gave us a tour. He started on Dobro with a few tunes, switched to acoustic guitars of several varieties, a song with him playing keys, then banjo and ukulele. What a great show by a living legend. His voice is strong and his stage persona sparkles with wit and asides while he laid down a bunch of classic blues and boogie including Going Up the Country, Mississippi Big Butt Blues Fishing Blues, Queen Bee, Corina, Corina, Annie Mae and Checking on My Baby on banjo. His play featured a bit of slop, which he doesn't seem at all concerned with, and a beautiful chimey clear tone I've never heard the equal of.
His set was a bit over an hour followed by a half hour encore that finished off with Sitting On Top of the World, which had the whole crowd singing along. Good times! He is indeed sitting there.
If he comes by, go see him. You won't be disappointed as has been the case for me with several old time players lately.
This was a cool gig.
