Take this hammer, carry it to the captain
Take this hammer, carry it to the captain
Take this hammer, carry it to the captain
Tell him I'm gone, tell him I'm gone

If he asks you was I runnin'
If he asks you was I runnin'
If he asks you was I runnin'
Tell him I was flyin', tell him I was flyin'

If he asks you was I laughin'
If he asks you was I laughin'
If he asks you was I laughin'
Tell him I was cryin', tell him I was cryin'

Is Yusuf Cat Stevens? or am I getting mixed up

Re: Does this sound mildly familiar??

First verse is Mississippi John Hurt's "Spike Driver Blues" upon which "Ballad of John Henry" was based, but other than that not sure...

Re: Does this sound mildly familiar??

Yes.

And Yusuf aka Cat Stevens has roots in the blues. Lead Belly tune was one of the first songs he learned.

Re: Does this sound mildly familiar??

FYI for anyone that doesn't know...The Ballad of John Henry was titled Spike Driver Blues for a short while. If I recall correctly, this was shortly after Joe finished recording the album and was playing this on tour.
At some point in time (obviously before the cd was pressed), the name was changed to BOJH.
