Yes, it is nice to be appreciated. I am very fortunate that so many musicians appreciate what I do. Makes all the hours of filming, editing and uploading feel more worthwhile.

Nothing wrong with that!!!  big_smile  Glad you made the trek with Phil, and thanks for capturing it,  he totally rocks!  He put on amazing 30 minutes in Charlottesville, totally different experience than Jammin Java.   Looking forward to seeing him again.

Re: SIMO

Was kind of worried we wouldn't be seeing Simo this Fall, but thankfully that changed. He has been the opening act for Ace Frehely recently so we drove up to the Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA on Tuesday to catch Simo's set. Had to queue up for a few hours with some "interesting" individuals. They thought we were a bit strange since we were only there to see Simo, who they had never heard of. We had no interest in Ace. There was an opener before JD and it was a pretty horrific death metal band. Luckily we had ear plugs. Finally JD came out and played his set. Since he was a support act he only got about 40 minutes, but they gave it their all. Started off with my favorite new rockin song of his, "Don't Waste Time". They played 5 songs altogether. We left after his set and met JD at the merch table. None of us wanted to hang in the venue so we went outside and hung out and talked with him for a few hours. Turned out to be quite a fun evening. Then the next day he and the guys were doing a free performance at Young Ones record store in Kutztown, PA in the middle of the day. Phil couldn't go since he had work, but there was no way I was sitting at home while this was going on. So I drove the 2 hours up to Kutztown. It was such a blast. The guys played 6 songs, 3 of which were brand new, one of which was acoustic. Love these new songs. They are going to start recording a new album in January and I have a feeling it will be quite spectacular because these new songs are killer. It was so cool to see them at a place like this. You would have thought they were playing in front of 1000 people instead of just 20. Their playing was off the hook. Afterwards we all hung out a bit. The store had some small posters so I asked for one and before I could even think to have anyone sign it, JD immediately took it and wrote a personalized message on it to me. He is such a sweetheart. Love that guy.

Nov 30th - Cluny
I did say, at the start of the year, that I wasn’t going to see any American bands, just to see if it could be done. Yeah, then almost at the start of the year I get recommended an album called Let Love Show The Way; and that starts an itch in the back of my brain, which grows when Planet Rock announce a Roadshow tour which includes SIMO, the perpetrators of the afore mentioned album.
Well, that tour hit Newcastle last night, and after the Brits, Aaron Keylock & Federal Charm pounded and hammered two great sets, SIMO came out on stage and JD wielded that big, red ES335 like a rapier, the “sharper” sound slicing through the tremendous backline of Elad’s bass & Adam’s drumming. Things seemed a little tentative at first, as band and audience sized each other up but standing down in front of the stage, you just knew something special was happening in among the improvisional style, and then “bang”, it all came together with an epic Long May You Sail that just had jaws dropping around the room. I get the impression that with these guys, you’re not going to get the same set 2 days running, but whatever they play, you’re in for one hell of an uplifting ride.

Re: SIMO

We had the pleasure of seeing Simo's last 3 shows of 2016. What an awesome way to end the year. He did a little run in Georgia leading up to New Year's Eve and the last show was number 215 of the year for the band. Now that's what you call "Always On the Road" lol. The first one of this run was in Atlanta at Smith's Olde Bar. Had a great time hanging with JD and the guys before the show. Phil had fun checking out "Red's" prototype. They put on an incredible performance. JD ended up breaking a string right on the first song. He is just fierce with "Red". And then he broke another one at the end of the show. These guys are definitely one of the best bands out there right now. They are so in tune (pardon the pun) with each other that when they play it's like they are reading each others thoughts. They do these jams within the songs where it feels like they take you on a journey. It's truly amazing. And even though the setlist was quite similar from show to show, the songs felt entirely different. One song could be 5 minutes one night and 9 minutes the next. It all depends on how they are feeling it and where they want to take it. At the second show in Macon they decided to go first (they were doing all these shows with Thomas Wynn and the Believers). Glad they took the opening slot because the bar was one people were still allowed to smoke at. We haven't dealt with that in quite a few years and man am I glad most places don't allow smoking any longer. We just reeked after the show. The guys, though, enjoyed it since they could smoke on stage. But they also admitted they were going back to take showers after the show, lol. At the Macon show they opened with a 20 minute "Long May You Sail" so we knew it was going to be quite a night. They ended it with a 12 minute "Evil" which they hadn't played live in quite a long time. It has this cool kind of twisted "How Many More Times" sound at the beginning and end. After the show JD grinned and said, "I guess we felt like jamming tonight" smile The last show was the NYE one in Columbus. What a crazy night it was. About 3 minutes into "Long May You Sail" the head on Elad's bass amp came tumbling to the floor. It was perfectly timed for when JD had to do the countdown to midnight. JD and Adam started right back up playing while a guy who works at the place tried to get the head back in place and was securing it with duct tape while Elad messed with the knobs to get the settings right. If people weren't paying attention, and most weren't since the place was full of drunks doing a number of foolish things, you never would have known anything happened. Elad finally got it straightened out and just joined right in and they then went on for another 12 minutes to complete the song which featured a really cool funky section right near the end. After a couple more songs, the head started dying, making all kinds of horrible noises. Elad started yanking tubes out the back of it to no avail. Another head was found to replace it and they finished out the rest of the show with it. Then JD broke two string within moments of each other on the next to last song. What I loved about it all though, was how calm and relaxed JD was about the whole thing. He always has such a positive attitude. I was more worried about it all than he was, lol. The 3 shows really were a blast and it was the perfect way to end the year.

Re: SIMO

We took a quick trip to Nashville Friday to see SIMO perform their first show since being in the studio for the past couple months. They showcased their new songs and have to say this is going to be one killer album. Really loved the songs. We had heard a few while they were on tour last year, but they have tweaked those and put little twists to them so some sound a bit different. There is definitely a bit of funkiness going on and I love it. The standout one in my mind was "I Pray". Quite a powerful song that gets in your head and sticks with you. New album should be out in September. Was an incredible night of music. This band is so in sync with each other because they truly are a band and not like so many others where it's a guitarist with a different rotating set of rhythm section members. Makes a big difference. So glad we made the trip. When JD saw us, he was like, "Hey my parents are here!" big_smile He's such a character. Love that guy smile

Re: SIMO

Flew out to Columbus for the night to catch JD and the guys since we won't be able to see them in our area. Killer show as always. They never disappoint. There's a new bass player, Adam Bednarik who did a great job. People keep freaking out on my videos and JD's facebook posts over the fact that Elad is no longer with them. Well, band members change. The new guy, Adam, is someone that JD has known a long time and even predates the bass player before Elad. So there you go. It's not for me to discuss the reasons why bands do what they do. It was a great night of music. These guys are always worth traveling for. The videos turned out amazing, some of my best work and I uploaded the whole show as a complete 1 hour 30 minute video. So plug your TV and stereo in and rock out https://youtu.be/CGxneEfxyfY
