Re: nothing new with bonamassa

I have no idea what the original poster was hoping to achieve with this post. I DO believe that there have indeed been a number of guitarists over the years who have created a unique sound that is recognisably theirs, whatever their own influences might have been - BB King, Hendrix, SRV, Knopfler, etc, and I'm not sure that Joe can be included in that group. In fact, I'm not sure that Joe would place himself in that group either. In an interview in December last year, he was asked about his own particular sound and he replied:

"I don’t think I have a definitive sound yet. I think it’s an amalgamated sound of different people."

But this doesn't bother me in the slightest. When a guitarist has a unique sound, their music can start to become very samey over time.  Personally I like the fact that Joe is so versatile and can play many different styles - it's part of what makes his music so interesting. If you listen to the solos on, say, The Great Flood and I'd Rather Go Blind, the sound is totally different in each case, but  both solos are brilliant....

Even fools say something worthwhile now and again

Re: nothing new with bonamassa

Eric Clapton's guitar work on 451 Ocean Boulevard was deemed "uninspired" by a reviewer.  Now, it's "iconic."  The greats stand on the shoulders of those who came before.  Like Clapton, Joe has such a range of styles, you never know what crazy mix of perfection is going to come out.  Hopefully, in due time, this guy will get beyond trying to put Bonamassa's music in a box.

Re: nothing new with bonamassa

I think the original poster likes his music, but wants to acknowledge that JB emulates his influences in a variety of ways. It comes off as a jab toward originality.

YUP, his guitars aren't new... the old theatres he plays at aren't new... his producers aren't new.
And guess what? His success isn't new either. tongue

I don't think we worry about what's new and what's not, but believe me, there's enough new want to stay current with his releases.
