Topic: Marshall 2550 Silver Jubilee

I just managed to get my hands on a 2550 (yea I know, only the 50 watt), but I have read a few posts in various places about messing around with the tubes, and how to get a "better" blues sound out of the amp vs. say what Slash was looking to get from it.  Just looking to see what others may have tried, and of course Joe if you want to pop in and give me some suggestions I am all ears.

Thanks!

Assuming the tubes are good and properly biased using just your volume control on your guitar after the amp is dialed in should do it.
Congrats cheers Ron

Re: Marshall 2550 Silver Jubilee

No1-

Find a speaker that souds good with the amp , there are lots and I havent tried them all but good ones I have found are EVM12L as Joe usess Celestion Green back , my current fav is  EVM12S which is a shallower version o the 12lL It sound brighter than is brother , which is ideal for this amp as it is quite dark sounding

N02 - RV5 AND DD3 in the loop of the Jubilee

NO3 - Dial in Joes settings and tweak from there Joe likes bass full on I prefer to dial it back as the amp gets louder

thats it.from me

Re: Marshall 2550 Silver Jubilee

Yeah, dont mod the amp, I have the 50 watt as well, it still kills.

Re: Marshall 2550 Silver Jubilee

..don't know much about Slash use of the amp but as an owner of an '88 2550, I would say do not overlook the 25w setting.

Even with my great neighbours, the 25w on 7 master vol still draws some attention, but the epic tone gets me away with it ;0)

The 25w and 50w each have a different feel and sound, and depending on gain/master/lead vol, many tones await.....

Joe has referred to changing his Amp tubes real often but, I have yet to try it!

There is a 2553 1/2 stack on Nashville Craigslist only $2300. Thought I'd let you know.

Re: Marshall 2550 Silver Jubilee

I have a 50w Jube head, and +1 on the speakers. They can make a big difference. Tubes will make a difference, but as long as they are properly biased, then start with amp settings and cabinet.

Tubes can darken or brighten an amp, or even give it stronger mids, etc., but until you know what you want to change exactly about the sound, through the cabinet you will be using, it will be a very expensive experiment.

I gig with a 4x12 Voodoo Amp Lab cab. G-12 75's and V30's in a X pattern. My practice cab is a 2x12 with EV's. That amp sounds totally different with the two cabs.
