Re: What to look for in a Guitar Teacher?

I would suggest learning the basic open chords first (A, Am C, D, E, Em, G), and getting them "programmed" into your fingers by repetedly changing from one to another, over and over. Its all about muscle memory.

How I’d love to see you smile....

Re: What to look for in a Guitar Teacher?

Thanks everyone for your advice.  I finally found an instructor!  I met him by accident in the local music shop. We hit it off and as an added bonus he's heard of Joe!

Went out and bought my first guitar too - a Savannah.  It's nothing to fancy but a good starter guitar according to the people at the store.

Unfortunately, I can't start my lessons right away. I am in the home stretch of publishing my third book but once I'm done that I'll be good to go.

Once again, thanks everyone for your advice.  It really helped me out a lot.

Awesome! Good luck.  Let us know how it goes when you start.

Re: What to look for in a Guitar Teacher?

Just an update.  I've only had four lessons but am learning Back in Black and Sunshine of Your Love.  Last week I learned the Peter Gunn theme. Not the entire songs, just excersises to get my fingers used moving around from one string to the next and playing chords.

Trying to do Back in Black and cramming your fingers in the way you need to has been a bit of a struggle but I'm getting there.

Sunshine of Your Love, is going okay too just trying to get my right hand to cooperate with my left has been fun.

All in all, my teacher says I'm picking up things rather quickly which is amazing since I go right from work to my lessons.  My brain is usually fried by then.

He says that in a week or so we'll start working on a whole song. I'm excited as I don't know what that song will be.

I'm having a good time and am looking forward to the day I can butcher one of Joe's songs - in a good way. HA HA.
