Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

Well, as the games have shown, there is terrific talent there from unexpected places. Ghana and Germany was a fantastic match and US must get a result today against Portugal to rest easy. That tie gave them a sniff of space and I fear they will play like a wounded animal. I too am disappointed in Argentina so far. Aside from Messi, they haven't much to show.

Go USA!

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

USA/Portugal - Remarkable result really. Once again, the established team failed to express any superiority and almost paid the price. USA thoroughly deserved their lead but failed by the smallest of margins to squeeze out the win and gain an automatic entry to the next round. Great goal from Jones, no question.

I can't see Germany making the mistake Portugal did, plus they have a day extra to recover from their exertions, so the USA will be reliant now on Ghana doing the business for them, which given their performance against Germany is more than possible. A draw between Ghana and Portugal would be enough for the USA. But if Ghana win and the USA are soundly beaten then goal difference could spell the end.

My own tipping has gone off the rails these last days. Algeria overwhelming South Korea? - didn't see that coming. Belgiums narrow win have kept me in the hunt, but these unexpected results from unfancied teams have left me and many others perplexed. Is the normal order of things changing?

A gut wrenching result for USA as I feared. As Klinsmann said after the match, "Goals are the result of mistakes." Howard was unbelievable in net for 99% of the match. This is definitely not a betting man's way to get rich this year.

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

What a night. My tipping is all to cock and how. I fancied Chile to give Holland a game and get a draw and was, wron!. I thought Brazil might drag their feet against Cameroon, wrong! Plus I thought Croatia would get the better of Mexico and was wrong again!

One night the underdogs triumph and the next, the results are as one would normally expect. Fortunately everyone in my group thought similarly so we are all up the proverbial creek.

Very difficult to call now. Well done Mexico, Neymar and Holland. Is Robben going to be then player of the tournament? He is on fire, and Neymar is right behind him. There are certainly more goals to come. I can't remember enjoying a world cup as much as this. England tomorrow, but nothing to expect. I don't mind if they get neaten, providing they try out all the young players, and maybe Lampard who didn't get a game so far. Losing all 3 doesn't sound good but it really doesn't matter anymore.

Good luck Costa Rica. Is that true as well, Joel Campbell already has an Arsenal loan deal? That didn't take long!

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

A good show of quality football today. Mexico is hitting their stride after a series of hiccups in qualifying, seeming to coalesce under the new coach. They could go very deep in the tournament. Brazil looks like Brazil. Holland is scary good. The cream is rising. I'd stick to the strength now since I see few upsets in the remaining games. I'd select Costa Rica to go through.

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

The Uruguayans are claiming a witchunt, but the pictures don't appear to lie. It is a trait in his character that he cannot suppress in certain situations. I don't like Cellini who is himself a very dirty player, and I suspect 'stuff' had been going on. But in the moment, Suarez felt he had been shouldered off and then instinctively went for retribution.

I think it will cost him very dear. I see him being sent home from the competition, but I suspect FIFA will not pursue an international ban. If they do, as they can and probably should, then Liverpool should sell him at the earliest opportunity if they can. He cannot be reformed. As one expert commented, given his age and experiences he is already  'hard-wired' to do this kind of thing again.

Shame for him in a way, as a superb player and father, but what kind of role model is this? His actions are the kind that will be transferred directly to the park and playing field. The punishment should be significant, but it will be a very sad footnote to what should have been an incredible career.

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

the (alleged) bite (cough) is bad enough but today listening (On BBC Radio5) to Liverpool fans and Uruguayans defending what was done as the same as a bad tackle or elbow was a disgrace and then to blame the English media as the reason that FIFA are investigating it says so much about how behaviour like this exists. Liverpool as a Club need to stand out and speak up for what is right and I hope that they do once FIFA have made their judgement. If Suarez plays again in England every touch of the ball will be meet with boo’s, and I cannot see his mentality dealing with that at all.

Up until last night England respected Suarez as being one of the best players in the world, - good enough to give Liverpool a chance of winning the Premiership last season and to take England out of the World Cup.

I think that this incident needs to result in Uruguay being expelled from the competition and perhaps even given a ban for Russia 2018. I think as the incident had an impact on the goal and Italy going out I think that they should be reinstated in place of Uruguay.

@fifamedia: DISCIPLINARY: Uruguay’s Luis Suarez suspended for 9 matches & banned for 4 months from any football-related activity.

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

Suarez got what he deserved.
Expect the US to play defensively unless Germany gets a goal today. Go USA!
My son sent a picture of my German/American grandson in Berlin. A US flag on one cheek, the German on the other. Win-win any way it goes. smile

not sure that he did Rick, as I think he got a fraction of what he deserved. Italy were taken out of the World Cup as a result of a goal that was scored in the next play from his bite, - the team were distracted by it, and Uruguay took advantage. The nations President has stated that he has done no wrong and the team Captain publicly dismissing it. IMO the team should have been thrown out of the tournament and Italy reinstated. The Italian manager resigned after this game and FIFA had opportunity to make things right. They took the soft option that will probably not result in appeals from Liverpool and Uruguay.

Suarez has now been banned three times for biting, the previous two bans have not made him change so why will this ban? He sees himself as the victim and that is the problem. This is the second World Cup where he has acted deplorably.

The ban by starting now will mean that he cannot play in World Cup but it is not long enough to impact significantly upon his Premiership season and Champions league.

I even wonder if this bite was a ploy to get Liverpool to sell him to Barca because Uruguay and Suarez are already blaming English media for getting this incident looked at. It is all denial of responsibility which tells me that he will never change.

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

I think this World Cup is The best since 1986 1978 & 1970 funny all those 3 were from South America

This has plenty of Goals, free flowing football and even the big stars are rising well Neymar Messi Van Persie Robben Benzema Muller, all playing very well.

Well all the group stages are over, there were some surprises Spain Italy Portugal going out but making way for some new exciting flowing football nations Costa Rica Algeria USA Columbia, Good to See Nigeria Africas strongest team through too ... The less said about England the better

So were through to The Knockout Stages now ..... The Last 16 ... and the draw has thrown up some beauties going into the 3rd week of this the ultimate nation sports competition.

Saturday
----------
Brazil v Chile  (even tho i love Chile flowing attacking style, i can only see Neymar & co winning)
Columbia v Uruguay  (this will be Yellow card hell, but i pick Columbia in a gritty encounter)

Sunday
---------
Holland v Mexico   (mexico are so so hard to beat, but Robben and RVP will undo them for sure)
Costa Rica v Greece (i'm loving Costa Rica's fearless play, Greece are underated, CR just by nose)

Monday
--------
France v Nigeria (i've been impressed with France's real quick passing going forward, i take them)
Germany v Algeria (can only see Germany finding out Algeria's weaknesses, should be a easy win)

Tuesday
---------
Argentina v Switzerland ( surely the team will help Lionel through here, he cant do it on his own)
Belguim v USA ( id really love to see The USA go thru, but Belguim will bring their full team here)

Hansamike is right, as for betting ive had no chance, too many surprises too many teams are playing well and fearless, its tough to get 2 right in a row, but its great to watch and so colourful , love the fans from each nation, this is my favourite tournament every 4 years, better than the olympics in my eyes

gonna see teams go out and attack now, theres no points on the games so its win or go home,
all full teams now, except   Uruguay, Suarez has probably made his team a no hoper in progressing too far, good riddance once ok but 3 times, get outta here

oh and to all my buddies stateside,  if The USA needed reminding that Football not soccer is a minority sport there, this is Their Nations team playing to win, they have 8alls

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

Indeed an entertaining series so far.
My selections:
Brazil since a loss would set off Nao Copa protests so the fix will be in (if needed). Chile deserved a better draw, they've never beaten Brazil since 2000.
Columbia. Uruguay without the biter is not the same team. The team will play with gusto remembering Escobar.
Mexico. Maybe the toughest game of the round. Netherlands will crash as they did last WC after cruising through their group. Mexico will have a very tough defense to penetrate as Brazil found out. Mexico will finally make it out of the knockout rounds after 5 tries.
Costa Rica. The Cinderellas meet and Greece will be found lacking.
France. Nigeria balking at practice since they got stiffed in the Gold Cup and want to see the money first. Will the planeload of cash arrive in time?
Germany. Die Mannschaft will prevail. Algeria still smarting from the 'detente waltz' that sent them home in 1982? Could be a squeaker.
Switzerland. I see an upset. Argentina relies too much on Messi who will be corraled by the Swiss defense.
USA? Home spirit gives me hope. Very tough draw, but only one player for Belgium has ever played in a WC. Praying for a speedy recovery from the hammy strain of Altidore and a choke by the Belgian stars who cruised through a weak group. the US MNT has earned the respect they've been grudgingly granted but the defense needs to play the game of their lives. No more gaffes please!

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

Someone wrote one hell of a script.

Brazil deserved to win and Chile didn't deserve to lose. Pinella just centimetres from a winner in extra time, then misses a penalty. Unbelievable, all of it really.

For me Neymar is an inspiration. He has been kicked all over the park today but still got up an scored the most confident of penalties. The guy has nerves of the strongest steel.

Tough on Chile but they had their chance. Man of the match. Howard Webb. No question. At least one Englishman continues to grace this wonderful tournament. Now who would have thought that?

An enthralling game. Brazil was lucky to escape the match with the win. Chile was the best team overall but came up short and certainly had their chances. Great job by Webb as you say. He was merciful and did not give the 2nd yellow when it would have given the game to Chile, most diplomatic and it was 50/50 there.
Colombia dominated as I expected. Goal of the Cup so far to James. He's a star for sure.
Go Mexico! If they win, this town will be a giant party.

Re: World Cup 2014 Brazil

I'm torn Rick. Netherlands should win, but it has been all so unpredictable. Brazil teetered on the brink last night. If Holland don't play at their absolute best they could get beat.

I want CR to win, but Greece, if they get an early goal will 'park the bus' and then that's it. The Holland game could even go to penalties. I'm going with Holland at 2-1 and CR at 1-0, but really, they could both go either way.

Read that article on the US where various commentators over there are criticising the team celebrating that they progress despite losing.

So many just don't get it and are also pretty ignorant, and, hypocritical. The group stage of the WC finals is just like the NFL league group stages. A whole host of result parameters are always possible. Teams there often progress at the expense of another despite losing certain games. Baseball has the same situation on numerous occasions.

With so many immigrant citizens in the US whose affinity with soccer is greater than other sports the continuing dissing of the sport by commentators there does the USA a disservice.

USA have improved steadily and gave an excellent account of themselves against one of the most competent sides. I thought Jermain Jones had an excellent game against Germany and his battle with Schweinsteiger throughout was a highlight. They have earnt their further chance in what was an extremely difficult group.
