Topic: Black Keys..."Turn Blue"

Okay, so usually I only post reviews for stuff I like and music I think other people on this site might like, but I find it nessesary to send out this following warning. I only do this as a public service for all of you out there. The new Black Keys albun   "Turn Blue" is just so awful, I fell like I just need to vent a little...Now..first I want to say that I LOVE the Black Keys and have every one of their discs and I've even talked to Dan Auerbach on the phone....(and that's a wierd story for another time, but I digress)...so I'm not a hater by any means...but this new disc....Ohhh where to begin...Well...Dangermouse the producer has managed to castrate the Keys sound to the point where there is NO EDGE left at all...a bunch of piano and mowtown backing vocals with Dan in falsetto most of the disc....It is just so dissapointing....This literally sounds nothing like their early work or even their last two commercial hits...No "Lonely  Boy" here or "Gold on the Ceiling" or "Lies" or anything. I don't know who to be more upset with...The Black Keys for making this...Dangermouse for ruining it...or the stupid Rolling Stone magazine that gave the thing 4 1/2 stars seroiusly? VERY VERY disappointing...I'm sorry...just my opinion....but I'm callin' it like I see it! One and a half stars according to the murfdog...and I spent 13.99 on that thing...uugghh

Re: Black Keys..."Turn Blue"

Bought it last week. Have been afraid to actually listen to it.  I know it's never going to be old school, lo-fi Black Keys again.  I actually think Attack and Release is one of their greatest albums - so the expanded sound is not without merit.  But it sounds like it has gone way to far on the pop side.  Dan has a great voice and the falsetto doesn't do much for me.  So falsetto nearly full time is a drag.  I'm thinking this is going to be a one and done listening exercise for me.  Ugh.

Gibson 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissue, Gibson LP Standard Faded CSB, Gibson Gary Moore LP Standard, Epi Joe Bonamassa GT LP, Epi Zakk Wylde LP, Dean Michael Schenker Flying V, Jackson Randy Rhoads V, ESP/LTD George Lynch Kamikaze, EVH Striped Series R/B/W, Fender/Squire John 5 Telecaster, Fender Joe Strummer Relic Telecaster

Yeah....I also failed to mention that the production on this record is utterly bizarre...Sound levels seem to rise and fall randomly, like someone is messing with your volume knob...it's very faint, but noticeable and annoying...

Re: Black Keys..."Turn Blue"

I had read a review that praised them for "takin a risk"for trying something completely different.
Seems like maybe the well ran dry on the norm and they decided to do something totally different.Maybe they shouldn't have used the Black Keys name ?But the name sells.

Re: Black Keys..."Turn Blue"

I guess I'm in the minority here, I like "Turn Blue". When I first put the CD in I was thinking my kid gave me the wrong CD, the opening song made me think Pink Floyd! They definitely put a different spin on their sound.

My sons turned me on the Black Keys when Brothers came out, so I haven't been a fan as long as many others.

Brothers reminds me of the old days of great quality music, every song on the album is a winner. I saw them once during the promotion of ElCamino. GREAT show!!

The Black Keys put a very strict rule into effect related to scalping. My son had 2 general admission tickets for the Philly show this past Saturday, they were considered paperless. He bought them back in May, you get them in person at the show.  He had something come up at work and he had to get up at 3AM and go to New York.  Long story short, the arena would not allow me to use the tickets because they were in his name.  You had to have the same credit card when you showed up at the arena, ID that matched the name when purchased and your entire party had to be present.  We have the same last name, I had the credit card statement with me, me & my hubby's name and address on it.  I paid for the tickets, its our credit card and I couldn't use the tickets...@$75 a piece, it was painful!!!

Here is a review from the show.
