Topic: Yosemite Rim Fire

I've been closely monitoring this wildfire just outside of Yosemite. So far 11,000 acres have burned and it is 0% contained. A friends resort property which I have spent extensive time working on is right in the middle of the evacuation zone. Hoping and praying my recently deceased friend Peters wife and son are out of harms way and miraculously the property might be spared. Watching live report now that it is growing by the hour. Here's the link to the property at stake. http://www.spinningwheelyosemite.com    If the winds push the fire north the town of Groveland and the Pine Mountain Lake residents will be effected which means approx. 2500 homes.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

been watching it online and TV the last few days, doesn't sound good. Seems like you guys get all the fires and we get tornadoes like the midwest. here's hoping the winds die down, that always seems to be the deciding factor on how fast it can be contained.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

That fire that had us all smoked up in Mammoth may still be burning in the wilderness East of Yosemite on the Kern River basin too. I was told the State had no resources to fight it and they were just letting it go with only some back fires started to contain, since it was in pretty inaccessible terrain that hadn't burned in decades and needed to burn. I hope the State can assemble some resources for that one on the other side to at least protect the structures. The Sierra was dry as a bone on the Eastern side.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

I have not watched the news in days and was unaware.      I am starting my AM rosary now and a miracle should be coming soon.

Power of Prayer, whatever "Brand" you use!

I have lived in Tahoe 35 years and every summer fire season is a challenge, but it is VERY dry this year for sure.

I have horse packed in the Kern River area and love Yosemite, it was the first place I brought my Mom a long time ago, when I first moved out here from the East Coast.

J Dawg,  I will send extra prayers for your friends.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

We're getting quite a bit of smoke from that fire as well as one outside of Pioneer, one by New Melones Resevoir as well as the Forest Hill fire which I heard today they don't expect to get contained till the end of the month! Life in the foothills! Whatta ya gonna do? Hey Tahoerim-I heard from my girlfriend that they got quite a bit of rain yesterday in South Shore. Of course with that comes more lightning and more fires!

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

Been getting updates from Peters son in law Chris, after a very harrowing night the Cal Fire boys held the flames at bay and Spinning Wheel is still standing. He says there's even a few trees left! God bless those firefighters!!!

Hay, It threatened a lot, a short downpour once in a while, I am on the North Shore.  Better when it soaks things as it strikes things.

Some build up of clouds starting now.

Thank God for Fire Fighters indeed!

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

that is good news, but I was just reading an article where they said the containment is down to 2% from 5% yesterday. it's astonishing to me what a crazy fire year it's been, currently there are 51 uncontained fires in the west. It also said that the U.S. Forest Service has spent $967 million this year to fight them, they are running out of money and will have to allocate monies from other projects in order to continue to fund efforts. yeah, let the wind die down and bring on some rain.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

This thing is getting very ugly! The entire Pine Mountain Lake community has been evacuated and the fire is raging just the other side of the river from the private airport. There are a 1,000 or more custom vacation homes just below the airport and most of them clustered together with plenty of trees to fuel the fire. If the fire gets into this community the town of Groveland is next, they're practically connected. My friend Chris sent his 3 young children to the Bay Area today just to be safe. He & his wife Corrina have to worry about their home and their family business, the historic Iron Door Saloon in downtown Groveland. The saloon has been their since 1852 and has survived many fires, but this could be the ultimate test! I've spent so much time here over the years and can't imagine it all going away. The fire is also moving south toward Yosemite National Park.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

Agree.  Very destructive situation out west.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

The battle line is drawn this morning to save the homes in Pine Mtn. Lake. The fire is now threatening very populated areas. Tue. I talked to my good friend Doug who has put me up at his vacation home there dozens of times. He's recently retired from Berkeley Fire Dept. and wasn't too worried, but yesterday hustled up there to get some valuables out of the house. Also spoke with another good friend here in Benicia who's house I've done numerous remodel projects on up there and Ken said all we can do is wait it out. Hopin' Mother Nature cuts us all some slack! Everybody up there can't thank the firefighters enough for their efforts.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

Praying for rain and relief up there in the Sierra! We have a big monsoon headed here from the South with heavy rain in tstorms this weekend. I hope that heads your way. The lightning not so much but the deluges yes. We are tinder dry here as well but a bit early for our bad fires with the heavy santa ana winds behind them.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

Thanks for all your thoughts, but we're just going to let nature take it's course. The fire crews are doing all they can, but this is just about beyond their control. God bless them for their efforts.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

Got the news today from my friend Chris who owns the Iron Door in Groveland that their family lost 2 of the homes @ Spinning Wheel which were across the river from the 4 others the firefighters were able to save. One I spent months remodeling 3 years ago, the other I stayed in on numerous trips to the property. What can you do? The firestorm has moved north towards Tuolemne and Sonora, but still outta control.

Re: Yosemite Rim Fire

very sorry to hear that dawg. They say it's now 20% contained, but it doesn't look good in the next few days. It would be really tragic if it took out some of those Seqouias. They need some divine intervention here, fingers crossed for rain.
