Topic: Hand-picked by Joe - really?

The excellent cover story of Joe in Classic rock (issue 185 July 2013) comes with a CD described as "14 tracks hand-picked by Joe Bonamassa." Did Joe really pick these? Or am I being naive even asking this question?

Of the 14 tracks on the CD, there are four tracks with which Joe is connected i.e.he plays on them, so it makes sense that they might be on this CD. But when you look at the other ten tracks, seven are distributed by the label that licenses Joe's recordings namely Mascot/Provogue, and the other three tracks are handled by a publicist who also works for Mascot/Provogue. So are these really Joe's personal recommendations? I wonder if Joe knows what is being done in his name? If my hunch is right this is just a cynical use of his name and an insult to the many fans who follow Joe.

I dip into this forum from time to time. It's always good to see what people are saying but this is the first time I have posted. I just feel really strongly that as a reader of Classic Rock and a big fan of Joe, someone is pulling my wire! Full credit to Joe for having this open forum.

Thanks for pointing this out Gordo. I haven't seen the magazine or the cd yet. Maybe I'm being naive, but I don't think Joe would let something say "hand picked by Joe Bonamassa" if it weren't true. Perhaps he was given a list of songs and asked to pick 14. Nothing wrong with promoting your own stuff, but it sounds like the way it was portrayed might be a bit misleading

It may have something to do with distribution rights in Europe. Provogue owns them I believe.

Re: Hand-picked by Joe - really?

don't care who picked them myself, - they are an excellent mix, having just driven back home listening to it in the car just now. And I think Joe may have played on six of them or played with six of those artists? 1, 2,3,5,7 and 14.

I got the digital version that is available for download now in the US to read the article. Can't seem to find a tracklisting. I know that that he had to be coerced to play his own music on his radio program. Is not Provogue a pretty big label in Europe? And if it is current releases then wouldn't it stand to reason a lot would be on that label. Now the tracks that are from his own releases wouldn't it stand to reason that if asked to pick his favorites from those he could easily pick his favorite's from them? Again I don't know what tracks we are talking about and I don't have all the information but if I have a chance to help a brother out or sister for that matter I certainly would. Joe seems to get grief if he doesn't help artists and when if he seemingly does he catches it too. Can't win situation. Like he says in the interview he seems have a target on his back. If you like the tracks for the CD what difference does it make whether Joe picked them from a list or his Ipod?

Re: Hand-picked by Joe - really?

I like the list! Funny 99 Shades is on the list... The Mrs and I went to New Hampshire for the White Mountain Boogie last summer. JJ Gray and Mofro were the headliners on the last day. We loved the group!
99 Shades is presently played "early and often" on one the XM station we listen to.
We are attending a Funk festival in Pennsylvania in August...JJ Gray is on the bill ( along with Anders Osborn!!)
This fest would be a great venue for Rock Candy Funk Party by the way...

Re: Hand-picked by Joe - really?

I picked the songs based on the criteria I was given.  There were some on my initial list that Classic Rock couldn't get clearances for so we went for some alternates.

What do you think I do all day just play guitar??? Lol

LOL.  You don't have time to just play guitar all day, Joe.

But every time I hear or see you, I think that's all you must do.  It's freaking amazing, that you find time to do all you do.

And inspiring!!!!

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.
