Topic: Thursday Afternoon Ear Candy

This from Grooveyard:

"Excellent debut studio disc by this awesome retro-70s power trio from the UK featuring Joe Gooch on guitar & vocals and Leo Lyons on bass from the legendary classic rock band Ten Years After. Includes 11 tracks of killer, outstanding, blues-based,
heavy guitar rock n' roll mojo that lands kool and solid @ the vintage hard rock boogie train. Highly recommended to fans of Ten Years After & serious old-school six string guitar rockers."

Here's a link to some mp3 sample cuts. I love debut albums...

that is damn good for a first release, thanks Stu. I know son will like it so will add to the list to buy. I don't know if I would pitch the whole TYA thing, maybe tell that about Leo and let people draw their own conclusions. Then I realize it's just a review. love the vocals, solid.

actually, Going Home does sound a lot like TYA

Yeah I really liked it. As I mentioned in my original post, I love debut albums, they're usually more stripped down and raw and often contain material that has been brewing for a long time, sometimes years. Follow-up albums can be hurried, and/or a new producer and engineer gets ahold of the music to make it 'better' and that raw edge gets lost. New songs come along that were written quickly. And there's the dreaded 'maturing' of the band. Yikes!

There's no doubt some acts get better with time, or maintain their vibe. I think I may have posted something similar to this quite some time ago. There's always exceptions, but for me:

Led Zep 1 is my favorite Zep album. The Outlaws never really matched their debut album IMO. Heart's debut album Dreamboat Annie is my favorite release by them. Then there's Black Sabbath self-titled debut, Steely Dan Can't Buy a Thrill, The Doors self-titled, Guns and Roses Appetite for Destruction, Boston self-titled, Skynyrd's 'Prounced' album, etc.

I know there's more, but these come to mind...

I got the grooveyard email and that's is one I also earmarked!I do agree that there are so many cases where the debut release is the best. The one you named for sure.Although I put Physical Graffitti along side 1.
Other debuts:Montrose,Van HalenTmy fav),Areosmith(Toys pretty close though,Sanrtana,Pearl Jam,Nirvana(if it counts because they had an indie relealese) I'm sure I'm missing more. However, there are probably more bands that hit there stride later on.I think of the WHo,Rolling Stones,ELP,Yes,SRV,Deep Purple,AC/DC to name some. But a lot of debut albums have that majic. Its a shame when it happens because they leave you hungry for more.
