Re: Janis Joplin

My brother was a big fan back in the day when she was with Big Brother & the Holding Company.  Their music was a bit hit and miss for me, but absolutely no denying her talent.  She was a legendary drinker as well as druggie and her libation of choice was Southern Comfort.  SC has to be the worst liquor made - tastes like cough syrup and causes a major hangover.  Janis would go through a good portion of a fifth during a performance and would forget she wasn't wearing underwear.

I'm a big fan too. This is my favorite track, Trouble in Mind. There's a special place in my heart for SoCo.

All I know is something like a bird within her sang,

All I know she sang a little while and then flew on,

Tell me all that you know, I'll show you, snow and rain.

Don't cry now, don't you cry, don't you cry anymore.

What is success? Is it do yo' own thang, or is it to join the rest?   -Allen Toussaint

Re: Janis Joplin

i don't know about or ever tried Southern Comfort. don't think that i can try anything of the sort because (and this is without any exaggeration!) i lose my mind after only 1 glass of wine (or maybe even only 2 thirds of it !)...
Back to Janis Now, i love that She keeps improvising and changing with the lyrics whenever she performs live.

Re: Janis Joplin

i liked her work with Big Brother & The Holding Company, so i got curious as to why she left them, and i'd have to say that i got really confused because half the websites say She had a good relationship with them, and the other half say that She was a hard person to be around... !

Re: Janis Joplin

Saw JJ about a half a dozen times and every show she left the stage totally drained. Never gave less than 100% of herself, and baring yourself to the world has got to challenge even the strongest personalities.

SoCo is awesome! Cough syrup? nfw.  Its the national hard liquor of hockey parents in Canada, how bad can it be!

Saw her a couple of times. She was an incredible singer and gave it her all. Too bad the demons got her. I can't agree with the SoCo. That stuff is nasty! I'd rather chug Romilar.

Re: Janis Joplin

http://youtu.be/FVpDOIPx_sY - This is one of my favorite of her live performances on You Tube. (I was too young to her live.)  I love her singing on most songs.  Sometimes she was too out of it and screamed too much, but generally she was a wonderful blues/rock/soul singer/performer.  Perhaps the best female rock artist of any generation.  Definitely too sad that she died so young.

This live version of Ball and Chain at Monterey even left Mama Cass Elliot with her jaw dropped! Still gives me chills watching her perform this!

P.S. This vid includes another song as well! Can't think of the name though, but from the Big Brother & The Holding Company days.

Re: Janis Joplin
