Topic: noise gate
Hi,
I'm wondering which noise gate Joe is using to avoid hiss/hum.
I consider to purchase ISP Decimator G string or Boss NS-2 because of internal loop feature.
Thx in advance for feedback

There aren't any noise gate devices as far as I know. You can start with a rack mount power conditioner (a decent one with isolated outlets on it) and a voodoo lab pedal power or any other pedal powering unit that has isolated outputs, good cables but you're still going to have some humming when you're up close to something that loud especially. Even smaller amp setups, using good quality cables etc will hum a bit. And when with rest of band, you're not going to hear it.
There is a noise gate feature built in my line 6 M9 that I use for playing at home. I have it on but you have to set them so as soon as the hum starts to cut out, leave it there. They can make your stuff quiet but you lose some life in your sound and they choke the sustain sometimes a little too much.
I tried my brother's Decimator. There's different levels on it. If you find the "sweet spot" you can get it to where when you're not playing, your guitar isn't feeding back. IF you want a guitar to sustain, and ring out... or have that "feedbacky sustain" you won't get it with the pedal on depending on how you tweak it. For metal tones and lots of crunch, I liked it a lot. But it didn't work that great (trying not to say it sucked the tone) but it does what it says it does, while not helping your sound. Just no feedback. In fact, it does so by cutting your signal. The settings on the pedal decide how quick it is to cut the signal when you hit a note.
I didn't like it.
What nic said pretty much hit the nail on the head. Unless you're playing in a metal band, using a heap of distortion, a noise suppressor isn't all the beneficial. I think overall for rock or blues playing, you'll lose more than you'll gain.
I've never had any luck with noise gates except in line 6 gear. Every time I try one with a tube amp and no modeling it cuts something out that I miss, I don't know what that something is, but I'm perfectly happy with 60 cycle hum as long as that something is left intact and with a gibson when I'm not playing I'd usually switch to a pickup with no volume if I'm trying to hide any extra hum.
