Is this a drum thread now?
Didn't get any drum stuff for Christmas - but I did buy a drum kit as a present!
Wifey is an LPN, but going to school for her RN right now - and one of her classmates is a young single mother with a 5yo son.
Wifey and her friend get together fairly regularly for study sessions before tests, and that leaves me on "daddy duty" (plus extra boy) while they study - which I don't mind at all, actually.
The kid actually doesn't have too much "male influence" in his life as his dad isn't in his life much at all...
Anyways, the kid kinda likes guitars - but he LOVES my drum kit (1978 Slingerland with roto-toms) because it just so happens his (absent) father plays drums.
So, when he comes over I give him little mini-lessons (only so much a 5yo brain can handle at one time) - and I've given him drum sticks and a practice pad to take with him for going over rudiments.
That kinda drives his mom nuts, because now he's always playing, but she does appreciate the positive influence and dedication he's putting into it...
Anyways, the kid was asking for a drum kit for Christmas - but nursing school isn't cheap and his mom is definitely hurting as she works full-time, goes to school and then works hard at being a good mother too - so didn't look like that was going to happen.
Until, that is, Musician Friend's "Stupid Deal of the Day" was a $400 complete (beginner) drum kit for only $179 - so, I bought it and surprised the little guy.
His mother sent me video of him opening it Christmas morning and GOING COMPLETELY CRAZY - so it was definitely worth it.
Maybe I've just doomed him to a life of being the butt of "drummer jokes" - but that sure beats some of the alternatives - at least he'll get to hang out with musicians, right?!
Now does anybody want to hear about the gun I gave as a present?!
