Sehr Gut!

I've watched several of your videos off and on. Some nights I get in the mood to learn new licks and turn to youtube for guidance.

Hi all, forgive a stupid question from a non-playing Joe fan.

Have been wondering what the difference is between licks, riffs and shreds??

I'm no expert, but I'll try to explain MY understanding of these terms:

Lick - Generally a 'one off' sequence of notes that sounds cool and can be 'plugged in' to a particular chord progression.

Riff - Generally a repeating sequence that is used again and again in a song (Think of the opening riff from 'Smoke On the Water' for example')

Shred - I think of 'shredding' as the ultra fast playing style (think Yngwie Malsteen etc.).  Very very fast sweep picking of usually 16th century classical riffs at high speed across all the strings...

Actually the term 'shred' can be used in different context.  There are a whole bunch of videos on Youtube with "[insert name of famous guitarist here] Shreds" which are joke videos where someone has dubbed in terrible playing over the top of some classic players...

Jimi75 - Sorry I took your thread a little OT with my post above.

I liked your YT lesson - great lick which I am going to try out now.  I really like the way to start off the lesson with the lick and full speed instead of talking for minutes on end like a lot of others do.  This way anyone can quickly check out if this is a lick they want to learn and stay or move on...  Well done.

Wow Devan, this is a huge help to me.  This has been bothering me for a long time.

Very nicely explained.  Figured people would say "Can't explain it, will have to show you".

Actually I did play a hundred years ago but only the very basics....

Sorry for the interruption.  Thank you very much.

Haha - Thanks rpic !! Yes, those are my two sons, who are both guitar mad and play.  My older boy is in a couple of bands now.  And yes, I am an AC/DC fan from way back, and in the pic I am playing my '74 Les Paul Deluxe which was my first 'real' guitar that I bought back in the early '80s.  I've since given that guitar to my son to play...

Jimi,

I really liked the video and I thought you did a great job of explaining the lick and and showing how to play it in different positions.  I realize that this is a short lesson but overall I wanted a bit more information as to the fills you were playing along with those cool jazzy chords.

Personally I really like the ability to play a bit of lead mixed in with a bit of rhythm and while I improve that kind of thing quite a bit sometimes it helps to have a more structured approach.  So if the video was meant to be a teaser for a more involved/longer lesson - I'm in. smile

Thanks for posting.
