Topic: Newcastle City Hall - under threat.

Just had some disturbing news that Newcastle's former premier venue, City Hall, could be under threat of closure after 80 years. It's a venue I certainly spent a lot of nights in during the 1980s when "local" bands like Whitesnake did 2 or 3 night runs in the 2,250 seater before the Arena was built (or some bands sneaked over to Whitley Bay Ice Rink). Anybody who's anybody has played the City Hall over the years, and there's an impressive list of Guitar legends in there, including Joe (Steve Vai coming up in a week or so.).

Have noticed for a while, that it has been losing ground for bands to the slightly smaller but more modern Sage, "ower the watter" in Gateshead; though latterly, it seems to have been a venue for commedians.

There's an online petition going, if anyone want to sign and support the venue, patrons old and new, near or far, support would be appreciated.

Have signed the petition Mike. I love this venue and have been to many concerts over the years. It would need promoters to put it on their map again though. Here's hoping.

Cheers Kenny;
The closures are also affecting the City Baths, which as you know, is in the same block. It'll be a shame if its going to be sold off and re-developed for student accomodation/facilities which seems to be the trend for that part of Newcastle.

There has to be room for City Hall, it's as much part of Newcastle's cultural heart as the Theatre Royal: the Academy just isn't big enough and the Arena has no soul.

Hate to hear these type stories.

'Fraid it's all too symptomatic of the times. Soon as budgets tighten, Local Authorities try to sell off their Crown Jewels. If it were to happen though, lets hope a sympathetic buyer comes forward.
