Topic: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

Ah, um... I just did it... Only a few minutes ago pulled the trigger on a 50W Carol-Ann Triptik that came up for sale on The Gear Page... cool

It's going back to CA so Alan can rewire it for our 240V power here, so I don't expect to see it for a few weeks yet.

Meantime, I now have to think about a cab for it, and the speakers.  What works best with this amp?  I hear most people talk about this amp being voiced more for EV12L's?  What about Scumback speakers or any other?

Thanks in advance! smile

Hi Devan
Do you mean Alan from Carol Ann? He lives a mile or so from me in N.H. USA not Ca. Anyway I have a OD2, OD3, Tucania and a 100w Triptik and without a doubt they sound the best with a 16ohm configuration of EV12L's hands down. Again that's my opinion
You will love the Triptek Alan of Carol Ann (Owner) is a great guy and knows his stuff like no other.
Congrats Cheers Ron

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

I use 8 phm EV12L + 8 ohm Scholz Classic wired for 16 ohms. Great cabinet (semi open) made by Stone Age.

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

Thanks for the replies guys...  Haha Ron, I meant CA as in 'Carol Ann Amplification', not the state.  My knowledge of US Geography is horrendous.  I'd get lost going to the corner shop! big_smile

And it looks like my knowledge of high school electronics/physics is also getting scatty - I am thinking that 2 x 8 ohm speakers in parallel will take the input from the 16 ohm output?  Or was it in serial???  Best I talk to the cab makers in question about this... tongue

2x 8's paralleled is 4 and 2x 8's seriesed is 16! smile

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

I wondered about the speaker question too. I ordered a Triptik a while ago but I'm still waiting for it to be delivered.
I have two Scumback loaded cabs and I do hope they get along with the Triptik. Will report once I get the amp.

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

Ha! Stefan - Good, you passed the high school test I secretly set you! lol  Thanks for the heads up!

Bluesbreaker - I was thinking about Scumback speakers too.  I'd be VERY interested to hear which ones you selected, and how they sound with the Triptik...

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

Haha, never had a store bought cab (can't afford them) so knowing my ohmages is the only way!

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

The Triptik has a bit of Marshall flavor. I don't have experience with Scumbacks, but I hear they pair nicely with it. The word (from Alan) is that the Triptik is not too particular about speakers. The OD amps, on the other hand, don't do as well with speakers that are prone to cone cry.

2x8 in parallel is 4ohm. 2x8 series is 16ohm
I am sure no matter what speaker you use the Triptik will blow you away. Have you actually tried one? These are marvelous amps that can go from clean to mean, very articulate, very quite and put's magic at the end of your fingers. I use mine with just delay and reverb in the effects loop and guitar and cable. Dial it in and you are on your way to tonally bliss. Let us know when you get it in. I suggest you make sure all the tubes are seated properly before you power it up. Also make sure who is doing the power conversion for you know's what they are doing. If I get a chance I will talk to Alan to make sure there is nothing to watch out for.
Cheers Ron

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

Mine has been ready for a while but Sandy has delayed shipping.
Ron: I wonder about the power conversion (230V in my part of the world). Does that require a different PT or just some rewiring?
Devan: I have cabs with M75s and BM75s. I expect to get the amp these coming days and will report back.

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

I suggest you guys go to the Csrol Ann web site and ask alan about conversion to 240v power what needs to be done for it to be done properly for his amps.. If I see him in the next few days I will ask

Re: Triptik Owners - What speakers work best?

Thanks for the advice everyone.  Ron - No, I haven't tried one myself.  I don't know if there are ANY other Triptiks in Australia yet, but I've heard some outstanding clips and reviews on other forums.

Bluesbreaker, I remember Alan once told me that the conversion is a matter of redoing a couple of wires internally.  He is charging me $100 for converting this Triptik from 120V to 240V.  A perfectly reasonable cost IMO.

Devan, I've had my Triptik for a couple of days now and had some fun dialing in tones and testing various speakers.

I first hooked it up to my favourite cab loaded with 2x12 Scumback M75s. That cab sounds wonderful with my Ceriatone Jubilee but with the Triptik it sounds too dull, even muffled. Next was another 2x12 I have with V30s. I hardly ever use this cab because I'm not to keen on V30s but this gave me the bite that I missed with the M75s. After that I tried an old Marshall 4x12 cab from the mid-80s with G12H-100s. Is it true that speaker is similar to the EV12L? Anyway, I'm not too keen on these, too hifi and sterile to my ears. So far my favourite is a 4x12 cab loaded with Scumback BM75s. I do like it when the speakers slightly add to the crunch and the BM75s are not as dark as the M75s.

I will probably get a matching Carol Ann cab for my Triptik (once I have the funds) but I'm still undecided what speaker to get. A pair of the new Celestion Creamback maybe?

Enjoy the amp when you get it. It really is awesome and very versatile. I'm finding new tones almost every time I play it.

A friend of mine has a Soldano cab with EV12Ls and he told me I could try it with my Triptik. I'm curious to hear that speaker.
Celestion CL80s are also recommended. Has anyone tried these?

Thanks for the follow up post with the results Bluesbreaker !

In between the helpful feedback here and on TGP, I think I am narrowing down my choice of speakers to:

1. EVM12L - which are surprisingly difficult to find on eBay etc.
2. Austin Speakerworks KTS-70
3. Celestion Creambacks
4. Scumback H75

The KTS-70s are also fairly hard to find second hand, and are around the $250 mark new!  I think the cab is going to be quite an expensive proposition once completed... smile
