Topic: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

Have been using my Traynor YCV-40wr with my Ceriatone 2555, but I feel as if it hasn't quite got enough 'oomph' and it's quite a hassle taking a head, cab and combo to gigs... so another 100 watt head will have to be the next thing...

Was thinking to just settle with a 100 watt DSL head as they're readily available and I should be able to get one on trade with my Traynor... I quite like the 100 watt DSL's (I know Joe does), what do you guys think? Will it work well with a Jubilee?

Thanks for all the help,

All the best,

- Stefan

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

I wouldn't pair a Marshall with another Marshall. It'll sound great of course, but what you should really try is a 6l6 based amp. Usually, the "ingredients" for pairing is 1 el34 type amp for the british grind and 1 6l6 type amp to dumble it up and smooth things out. I used to use a two head rig, but got tired of dragging two heads around, and found I could get  my sound solely with the 2555.

But back to your question, what's your budget? If you could spend over $1k, I would just get a Ceriatone Overtone or their SSS. Maybe an old fender head with a Dumble-esque pedal will be right on the money depending on your resources. Maybe even try the Jet City 50w head if you're on a budget.

Hope I was of assistance!

I use the 50 watt version with my Ceriatone 2550. Run a RV5 and a Super Chorus through the FX Loop with the DD3 through the Jubilee FX Loop. Instant EJ/Joe B tones.

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

Thanks for the responses guys!! My budget is basically what I can get on trade for my Traynor...

I like the Marshall with Marshall sound too... Like when Joe was using his old rig and would flick to his Category 5 Superbass.... That sounded great!

I just need something that will do that on edge of break-up thing well. For me the Traynor didn't have enough rough edge in that department.

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

Marshall on Marshall IS good...I think I'm just thinking of versatility down the road so you can explore other options if you want too. It's like, yeah, I love Les Pauls and have 2 of them, but my second real guitar was a Fender so that I could have a bit of versatility and mix things up.

I mean, an edge of break up sound is essentially IMHO a Fender style amp cranked. A JTM 45 might do you well though... or maybe even an Egnator tweaker- they're very versatile and my dad has one. I can coax just about any tone out of those things that I want.

What are your settings on the 2555? What speakers? I get quite an oomphy sound out of mine running through 65 watt greenbacks. It probably the ballsiest tone I've ever had, and cuts through the mix no matter what.

Was looking at the Tweaker but I really can't afford much unless I sell the Traynor for decent money. And if I did have the money I'd buy a Ceriatone OTS.... Have been thinking about 1959SLP's too.... Still not sure...

Got both amps running into a split 4x12 of Eminence Delta Pro 12-a's (EVM 12L equivalent) and my settings are:

Gain:5
Output Master: 10
Lead Master:4-6 (depending on venue)
Bass: 7.5
Mids: 7
Treble: 3.5
Presence: 5

Thanks for all your advice,

Stefan!

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

Try turning your presence down to about 3.5 and bumping your bass up just shy of full (on my Ceriatone, it's technically 10 because it goes to 11....). The Delta Pro's are great, but I realized I wasn't really a fan of them despite wanting Joe's tone a few years ago - it just wasn't who I was as a player. I like speakers that add some extra warmth to my sound as opposed to producing what the amp is doing exactly a la 12L's.

As far as selling the Traynor, I recall them selling for about $500 used or so. With that and a little extra cash you could check out the Tweaker, or even the Peavey Windsor head - it's not "boutique" by any standards, but a really decent amp on a budget (we're talking like $200 USD).

I think the 1959SLP's are quite expensive for what they do, and there might be some cheaper alternatives from Ceriatone. I have yet to be impressed by any of the current model Marshall's except the Vintage Moderns which are even a little old now.

What I might recommend is just spending a day going to every guitar store near you and literally playing everything that they have in your price range - I'm very wary of ordering amps without playing them and just going off of what people say. I've been looking for a clean amp for ages, and when I actually played all the amps I read about I disliked every one of them and ended up liking the Peavey classic the most.

Sorry for the lengthy posts, hope I helped!

Blackstar have some great amps, with lots of settings.

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

My Ceriatone starts to boom out with the bass any higher... The tone of the Ceriatone isn't a problem it sounds great... The problems lies with the Traynor.

Had a Peavey Windsor, I hated it. Was really fizzy in the overdrive department and no clean headroom, no matter how many mods we did to it.

From my experiences with Blackstar they are a little cold and lifeless sounding... Well to my ears anyway.

Thanks again for all the help,

- Stefan

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

It's interesting that you say about it booming, because I find it rather lifeless (with my setup) unless I boost the bass above 8. It becomes very articulate and lively....when did you get yours? Sorry this is off topic, just wondering smile

No problems man, I got mine a few months ago... But I've found the point just before the bass starts clouding up the neck pickup and it's perfect!

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

How about a Vintage Bassman or a band master Fender amp 6L6 tube power section.  Or a Marshall Vintage Modern with the KT88's  Joe really liked those too if I recall.

Played Vintage Modern... Didn't like it too much... Probably just me being a fusspot!

I really do like the clean channel on the DSL to me it does better old school Marshall tones that the V/M and the JVM.

That being said, my favourite current production Marshall is the Haze... Its dirty channel is perfect.. Real vintage tone to my ears... If only there was a 100 watt version!

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

That could be the thing that Blackstars are maybe more of a rock amp than a blues machine.

How about Laney's, i've heard that they got some great headroom.

Or go with the DSL, it have some nice review on the net.

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

When Joe talked about a two amp set up he said pair up a Marshall with a Fender or Dumble for the best combo.

I have tried this in m y own way with my handwired 5 watters (one boutique marshall voiced 5w and a 5F1 clone I put together myself) and it works very well you run one amp cleaner and one more distorted and get a fantastic combo of clarity with grind.

Just a thought...

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

That's what I've currently got now... The Traynor is very Fendery... It's just that it's not powerful enough.... Need 100 watts.

A Ceriatone OTS is really what I want!

But Joe uses 2 Marshalls together now, so obviously it can't sound too bad!

Thanks for all the help!

Re: Ceriatone 2555 needs a 100w counterpart!

It seems like you're really sold on a Marshall amp, so I'd probably just get one if I was you. You may want to check out the VoodooLabs Sparkle Drive. I'm sure you know what it is, but it runs a parallel overdrive with your current sound. That might help you get a little oomph - or maybe a parallel Twin with a tubescreamer up front?
