Topic: stolen guitars?

Anyone ever have any guitars stolen? I'm pretty sure my '65 SG Jr. was stolen out of my jeep (it's a hard top, but the passenger lock sticks) while I was at work after a guitar lesson a few weeks ago. I say a few weeks ago, because I haven't played it since then (have other guitars that I grab). I just realized I couldn't find it today... and I am so livid I could breathe fire. I tore my house apart looking for it, but its nowhere to be found. I've filed a police report and started calling around to local shops.

Dunno what else to do. I'm gonna have to sell off my firearms to cover the cost of another one.

Today is a sad day.

Re: stolen guitars?

Save the firearms and use it on the idiot that stole your guitar!  I hate it when people think they can do stuff like this.  Would serve the prick right.  You might want to look up that site on the forum that was all about making a detailed description about your instruments with pictures and things before this happens again.  I would but ALL of my guitars are replaceable and insured.

Also this goes without saying but I'll do it anyway.  Don't leave your guitar in your Jeep or any car for that matter.  If they are willing to open your door they are willing to bust a window out to get what they want.  My guess is it has to be someone that knows your routine because nobody would just randomly walk up to your car in broad day light not knowing if you were going to come out and start something with them.
Better yet hide a camera in your jeep and bait them up again.  When you see who it is turn it in to the police or get some street justice... I'd turn it in to the police and have the guy arrested.

Re: stolen guitars?

If it was taken while I was at work, chances are I will know who it is, as they were probably a customer of mine at least once. I will press charges, and then break their legs. I've never even been this sad about losing a woman. I care more about my guitars than I do a lot of people.

Re: stolen guitars?

Coming from a 30 year old male guitar-aholic I would put off women or at least being serous with women until your at least in your thirties.  I am 4 years older then my wife but I've been married for 7 years this January!  Some of the biggest fights we have had is because she caught me cheating on her... yep you guessed it.  It was a Stratocaster.  She always says I put that guitar before her.  Lets just say I disagree with her a little.  But if I had waited until I got some of my things in life I wanted out of the way like playing in a band most of the fights we had would have never happened.  My point is don't feel bad that your taking the loss of your baby harder then the loss of a girl friend.  You only had 1 65' SG, but there is thousands of fish in the sea and if one don't want you I'm sure another will.  Guitars are forever man!

Re: stolen guitars?

I couldn't care less about the girls haha. I just want my guitar. I'm realllllllly hoping that it was just misplaced, though I don't think that's the case. I've torn my house apart, but when my brothers get home on Tuesday, I'll have fresh eyes to look around. I've picked up extra shifts at work and will be getting a second job for the holidays to raise money faster so I can get a replacement.... And that really sucks because I was supposed to get a Les Paul next.

Re: stolen guitars?

I had my Firebird VII stolen after a show by another band.  I placed a craigslist ad saying that I had money and was looking for a certain type of guitar.  In your case I would say "looking for a vintage SG Jr,"  make it general.  Eventually I got connected with someone who had friends allover town working in pawnshops and we caught high resolution video and pictures of them trying to pawn the guitar.  I am so sorry to hear about your loss... take my car, take my money, take my women, but don't take my guitars.  I would also start contacting pawn shops.  The stores are supposed to check police reports, but they are not 100% fail-proof.

Re: stolen guitars?

Hope you had it insured through Heritage or some other musical instrument insurer.

Re: stolen guitars?

I've got at alert out to all the local pawn shops/music shops/guitar stores, and they all seem eager and willing to help. I've only discovered Heritage last night so it wasn't insured. I was doing some research and found out that since it is not used as a professional instrument (I play for hobby) that homeowners insurance MAY cover it. I've got a call in to my agent and should hear back tomorrow from him. I will be insuring all of my guitars through heritage.

Re: stolen guitars?

I hope it is recovered... That's the worst feeling any muso could have.

Re: stolen guitars?

Read the small print, from what you have written I doubt you would have been covered. Makes sure you store/tansport the guitars as they require.

Re: stolen guitars?

The problem with Homeowner's Insurance is they will pay the replacement value for an "SG guitar." To them a guitar is a guitar, so if you're lucky they will try to offer you whatever you will pay for an "SG" down at your local Guitar Center. I hope you find it. Put out some threads on TGP and The Les Paul forum so that folks can be on the lookout for it. Keep your eye on Craig's List too.

Re: stolen guitars?

Yes if they ask about you getting paid for ANYTHING deny it!  Even if it was just $10 you got paid, because your definition of professional and an insurance company's version of the same thing is totally different.  Remember they are NOT on your side and you more then likely will have a deductible just depends on your plan you set up.  The average is $500 deductible, but it could be more or less depending on your rates you signed up for.  Also bare in mind that just because they can cover the rest of the guitar now up front doesn't mean if you won't pay more for it in the long run.  Claims most often mean spike in your rates!  They are going to get their money back.  Insurance is as big a scam as paying 20% interest on a credit card.  It should be criminal what they get away with today!  Its almost as bad as stealing that SG out of your Jeep.  Why make my insurance go up?  I mean haven't I paid my dues on time for YEARS???  And now I've got one freaking claim and my rates go up 3%?!#%&*!  IT IS BULLSHIT!

Re: stolen guitars?

I have all my guitars specifically list with serials on my homeowners insurance policy.   I've never had to file a claim though.  My deductable is $500 per incident not per guitar.

I pay less than $100 per year add-on to insure them from "all perils".

Re: stolen guitars?

I've made a spreadsheet of all my other guitars and will take a copy when I go talk to my agent tomorrow and see about adding. I've never received a penny to ever play before, so I have nothing to lie about there.

Re: stolen guitars?

Report it on Vintage Guitar Magazine and I would report it to all of the local music/pawn  shops as well.....Sorry for your loss.
Years ago I had a Gold ring stolen from me in a bar....I found it in a nearby store for sale..I did get it back from them.
I hope you get her back...Please don't sell any  firearms....in the future you might not be able to buy any.....

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: stolen guitars?

So sorry to hear about your SG. I hope you get it back .

Re: stolen guitars?

I've only got one more pawn shop in the area that I couldn't get a hold of yesterday due to limited weekend business hours. I was told that about 80% of stolen guitars end up here, so maybe... just maybe. It makes me really nervous to take guitars out of my house.
