Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

Hey AD3three - How do you like the Pearly Gates? I got a set of them for Christmas last year, and finally put them in my LP Classic - I didnt care much for them at first, but after really fine tuning the guitar and playing around with the pickup heights, I really like the sound im getting from them, through my Marshall at least - Im more of a fan of the neck pickup than the bridge

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

When I first got them 4 years ago I had a Peavey Windsor and a home made 4x12 cab.  I think its fair to say I didn't give them a chance 4 years ago.  I put them in a Les Paul Classic and thought they were muddy.  The Les Paul ended up with 57' Classics and with the peavey amp I felt like I had the perfect Duane Allman Tone going on with it.  Then I put the pearly gates in the SG and thought they were ok but like I said before they were dark.  I even went on to put 1meg pots in the volume and it just didn't do it for me.  Then I sold the peavey, and sold the SG.  I didn't own a Gibson for a few years and then I bought the SG back from a friend of mine.  I just missed its playability.  When I purchased the guitar back it was the same guitar I sold with the pearly gates and the 1 meg pots, and now I'm using a blues jr only.  In the jr. it sounds bold and loud.  The Bridge is in fact my favorite of that set.  I've been into really big guitar sounds, you know tons of sustain and hold out and big bad D chord or something.  Think Eddie Van Halen or Mountain.  When I pick up the SG right now I feel like Leslie West, and I like that a lot.  I changed the pots and things to RS Guitarworks and I have to say it really helped out that guitar.  Don't buy cheap pots they are not created equal.  I like these pickups better then the stock pickups in my Traditional Pro or the Studio.  That is better the Burstbucker 3, better then the 57' classic in the neck of the pro, and better the 490R and 498T in the studio.  They just have a bit more balls then the stock gibson pickups.  But the other guitars have more versatility and feel like they can pull off AC/DC or Chet Atkins.  Hope to add to my amps next year with another 15 watt amp either a clean Vox AC15 or a Dark Terror and make the jr the clean sounding amp.  Leaning towards the Dark Terror since it has a ton of gain and an effects loop.

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

I have went back to Gibsons recently from my Stratocasters, but I just can't seem to warm up to a Les Paul.  I went back to my old friend, a Gibson Flying V.  I think I was always trying to get a Gibson tone out of my Strats.  I love Flying V's and don't plan on changing guitars for a long time.  The fact that Michael Schenker is playing better than ever had a little something to do with pushing me back to Flying V's.

What's the difference between the Dark Terror and the Tiny Terror?

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

An extra 12AX7 tube and a tube driven effects loop.  It has about double the gain circuit to pull off extra heavy stuff but it can also produce some really nice clean sounds as well.

Although my main band is country we have been adding some 80's rock here and there so we are now 40 percent classic rock, 10% 80's rock, 10% modern rock, and 40% country (most of which is modern country which sounds like watered down classic rock).  We mic everywhere now and I wasn't able to crank my Blues jr up past the 9:00 position at our last gig due to stage volume... So I never got the output tubes warm so to speak.  The idea I have is get an amp with about the same power and have it be my dirty amp and let the Fender stay more clean since I can't really crank it loud anyway.  If I don't do that I'm going to get some type of 212 combo that is about 50 watts in power has a lot of bottom end (can we say Marshall) but if I do that I'll have to save longer.

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

It's more than three years ago that I've played my beloved 70s Strat live for the last time. Since acquiring my Gibson Historic Gold Top this very guitar has been played exstensively. I didn't even change guitars on stage, I went with my Gold Top the entire gig. BUT this doesn't mean I am a Gibson man, because I love both guitars. After many years I have sold everything that was not heart bound and only a handful of Strats and the historic Paula survived. The next gig on 12/1/12 will definitely be a Strat gig.

I'd recommend against it. I used to own a JCM 800 2x12 from the 80's and it was not fun to carry from gig to gig. Having two 15 watt tube amps might be better in terms of carrying to a gig, and fitting all your band stuff into a trunk. Plus, if it was a gig where you didn't want to bring your whole rig, you could just bring one of the two amps instead of always having to lug around the marshall 2x12 combo. LOL Am I lazy or what!? lol

Sometimes the bolt on stuff just works....

Me crossing to the dark side and doing Hendrix's Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) with my band.

They definitely affect the way you play...

Cheers,

Stefan.

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

Oh yeah, I'm 30 now going 31 in a month or so and 60 pound amp is not on my to do list.  I started complaining about the Blues jr after moding it with those Billmaudio transformers I installed!  Were a 6 piece though and when we don't mic which is rare I'm worried about getting lost in the mix which is the only reason I would get more power.  But then again low gain signals travel further then high gain.

Either way the humbuckers in my Gibson seem to fit in better to the way I wanna sound vs. the longer scale necks and single coil pickups.

Nope, not lazy at all!! I have a TSL combo with 2x12 in it - It feels like its made out of concrete!! It stays in my living room as a practice amp!!

Haha, that's what I was going to post as a clear example...but RRs tone is killer!
Look for the better version with a clearer Slash sound. In top comments.
