Topic: I think I'm a Gibson man.

After years of playing my strat and countless gigs back in May I started playing my Gibson SG.   Off and on I would mix in a Telecaster, a Strat or 2, and a Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro.  The pro up to this point I think has smoked all the other guitars except maybe the SG.  Then my dad who is a avid collector of guitars lets me try out his pride and joy tonight.  Its a Gibson Les Paul Studio with a flame maple top trans black.  Its got the neck shape I like from the SG, but has the tone of the Pro with the maple top.  The SG can be very dark to me and I've tried to brighten it up but the Les Pauls just seem to have it all.  My Strats feel difficult to play these days and I miss the crunch when I play rhythm behind solos or the power when I am soloing.  All three guitars excel in that area but the rhythm sound of those LP's sound amazing and if I keep the amp tamed in the distortion area I can clean them up almost as well as my strats.  Who else is converted Fender to Gibson around here...

Joe did tongue

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

I was always a thin neck, Ibanez, PRS fan (still am) but ALWAYS wanted a Strat and Les Paul. Finally bought a Strat and it was a battle to get used to it. Finally bought a Les Paul and again, it was difficult to get comfortable playing but once I actually heard and felt the tone out of a LP firsthand, I knew why everybody loved them. I wouldn't say I converted from one to the other. I own 2 of each but overall I'd say I'm more of a Gibson fan too AD3THREE. Playing a 335 is what really sealed the deal for me...favorite guitar out there.

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

For comfort and feel, the Stratocaster wins with me hands down. It's the most ergonomic guitar ever designed in my opinion. The tones of Strats, Teles, and LPs, among other Gibsons, all have their place depending on the tone the song requires.

My Grosh Electrajet is my favourite - LP/SG tone with Strat comfort... big_smile

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

I would have to say I have been somewhat converted as well - I consider myself more of a Fender collector and a Les Paul player as of late - I got my first strat when I was 16 years old, and still have it, a white american standard, 1991 model - Over the years, I have collected a BUNCH of strats, even a few nice vintage ones in there as well - I find myself playing Gibson's more now, mainly my 335, and a LP Classic Gold Top - I recently bought one of the 2012 Standards with the coil taps, and love it, just dont play it very much - I have a tele that sits in my living room that I grab and play all the time, and when I go back and pick up my LP, its amazing at how much better it plays than the Fenders - I can never part with all the Fenders though - I sold several of them over the summer, but still have a good deal of them packed away for my son when he gets older - I do enjoy grabbing a strat and plugging into one of my old bassmans and noodle around though - but when its time to get loud, LP+Cord+Marshall = awesome!

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

Honestly, variety is the key for me....they all have a diiferent voice......But If I had to choose only one...it would be a Sg-period.

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

So true! smile

Actually, I started out on Les Pauls (with a cheap sunburst from Sears Roebuck in the late 70s) because that's what Ace Frehley played! smile - and, while I have some other brands (Fender, Ibanez, etc.) I still love that humbucker sound best above all others!

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

i like great guitars period......i've been lucky enough to purchase most of what I have wanted over the years and as a result it gives me great variety depending on my mood.....i love my les paul but i'm not always in a les paul mood......sometimes i just want the feel and sound of a strat of a tele.

sometimes i want the feel of a real fast neck and i grab my PRS.  i have 10 different guitar that all sound and do different things for me......at least in my mind they do.....lol....i use all of them at different times......whether just sitting around jamming or recording......i try to make sure they all get used as much as possible.

i do like some of them better than others but i dont think I could ever just be a "gibson guy" or a "fender guy" or whatever......i understand why some people do but its just not for me.

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

I like to think a guitar picks it's owner - not the other way around wink

That being said AD3THREE I was converted to Gibson after spending 5 years trying to sound like SRV I kind of got tired of the sound - it was all around me Strats everywhere. Then I got into Slash and discovered that I really do prefer an LP/Marshall sound over a Fender sound. I then "stumbled" upon a Youtube vid of our beloved Joe B. playing Blues Deluxe (Denmark I believe - the one with like a million views) and that kind of sealed the deal for me. I bought the best playing LP I could find and - an '03  R7 Goldtop - and never looked back. (funny - when I played the R7 before I bought it I played it unplugged and it sounded like a Grand Piano compared to my Strat)

I am thinking of selling/trading my last Gibson.  The Firebird VII that Johnny Winter autographed for me.  Been on a Gretsch kick, and back to Strats.  I would love a PRS DGT.

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

Although I do primarily play a LP I do reach for a Strat or Tele when the song is crying for it...

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

All you ever hear is you can make a strat come close to a gibson sound but you can't get a gibson to make a strat sound.  I kind of disagree with this, the in between pickups sounds seems true to me but not the grawl sound of a strat.  When I want to get heavy NO pedal no amp no anything can make a standard single coil strat compare to a Gibson.  But I can set my amp clean and with the use of pedals get some very nice clean tones or something that could really melt your face off.  Then I look at all the guys I try to copy, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Page, and all the 70's rock I like and what comes up as the common denominator?  Short scale Gibson with humbuckers.  People that have seen me play over the years have even asked me how much more practice am I putting in because they notice a difference in my playing.  And the answer is simple, I'm doing less because I don't have the time.  Its the sound and its the aditude of the tone they are hearing, not so much of the guitarist getting better.  Its just a fact I sound better to people and myself on a Gibson.

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

I'm a fairly new Player. Started out as a big SRV fan 2 years ago, and bought my first guitar. A Squire Vintage Modified Strat SRV lookalike. Never liked the guitar, but i play it because its the only one i have tongue

Around January this year i discovered Joe, and through his music i found Jimmy Page, Warren Haynes, Eric Clapton, Paul Kossoff, Gary Moore and other Les Paul players, and lets say a good Les Paul is highest on my 'going to buy' list.
Just waiting to find the right guitar with the nicest top in my price-range. I guess R8, Maybe R9 smile

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

You might want to try a more PAF style pickup in your dark SG. One around 8K with a Alnico5 magnet, put a 500k-1meg pot in there, and it will be pretty bright.

Fenders have always been the mistress I'd just mess around with every now and then, but my Gibsons are forever.

Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

Re: I think I'm a Gibson man.

The SG has Pearly Gates in it.  And I put a modern RS Guitarworks kit in.  Its a heck of a lot better then it was stock but it misses something when its not wide open.  The Les Pauls do good when I turn them down and the only thing I can think of that is different besides the mass of the guitar is the maple tops and the Nashvill bridge on the Les Pauls.  My Traditional Pro had flabby bass notes and was weak sounding, then I modified the saddles making them thinner and top wrapped the strings on the tail piece and its a tone monster now.  The Studio I'm playing has got good bass notes but I wanna see how wrapping does for it.  My guess is it will be killer after that.  I'm hoping first of the year to put a RS kit in the Studio as well.  Its not my guitar, its my dad's so we'll have to see what he thinks.  He's 61 and his hands have too much arthritis to play anymore (not from guitar but from playing baseball) He buys them as wall art and sends them home to me to play every now and then to keep the dust off them.
