Re: Rio Grande Humbuckers

I have an uncovered BBQ Bucker in the bridge of my SG. It's a killer pickup... very thick and warm. I think you'll like it.

Re: Rio Grande Humbuckers

I have a set. Thick and warm is a great description. I would say they are very DARK. Some people don't like them because of it.

RS guitarworks sells pots and caps that are geared for Rio Grande... pots that are measureed higher than 500k, the higher the pot, the more highs it will bring out. So if they're too dark, call up RS Guitarworks and tell them what kind of pickups you have. I heard from an excellent pickup winder down south that if you want them to really strong, order an Alnico8 bar magnet for them and take out the one that's in there. I have the magnets, but haven't had time to put them in yet. I made the mistake of soldering on covers without potting it, and the pickups got feedback-y because of it. hmm Gave the pickups to my brother.

Re: Rio Grande Humbuckers

for a LP you cannot beat Sheptones for tone, price, quality of build, and service.  Just something to consider.  Never had an issue with my Sheps being "too darK".  Of course there a bajillion different winders out there, and several dozen people here can chime in with their own opinion of what is best, but the "home retailer" for Rio Grande is around the corner from hy house, yet I choose to wait 4-6 weeks or so to get my Sheps, every time.

Re: Rio Grande Humbuckers

It's true, they are pretty dark. I run it in my SG with the tone control on "10" and it's still not too bright. I did a lot of research before I dropped it in the SG and I believe I read somewhere that they perform a lot better in SGs than Les Pauls. Just something to think about. Make sure you do lots of research.

Re: Rio Grande Humbuckers

Check out Sheptone... I'm thinking they're going to go in my next Les Paul if SD won't wind a set of the JB's in double creme for me.

It seems like everyone used to get those. 1) buy a les paul 2) put pearly gates pickups in them to sound unique. But when everyone does that, aren't you sounding like everyone else?

I personally would like to personally try them to see what all the hype is about. But these were and still seem to be all the rage, where if you knew little about after-market pickups, you'd still know about SD pearly gates. It was kind of annoying, so I got turned to to them.

Re: Rio Grande Humbuckers

I don't think the Pearly Gates pickups are unique.  I had them in my Les Paul for a while, and then moved them over to my SG because 5 years ago I was on sort of the tone quest of the Les Paul.  They sound like a vintage style paf to me.  I ended up getting a set of 57' Classics for that Les Paul that blew the Pearly Gates away, in my mind they still would (Sold the Les Paul Classic for a Telecaster and some other things, so I have no way to judge it now.)  I also has some Seymour Duncan 59' pickups and I didn't care for them at all, but the Pearly Gates sounded close to them but better to my ear.

Re: Rio Grande Humbuckers

the only experience I have with the pearly gates is a custom wound single coil one I had in a tele... it was very much a one trick pony, however, it did that one trick amazingly. I ended up trading the tele but it was a pretty cool pickup.
