Topic: NGD - My first P-90 guitar!! (Collings)

What can I say - in over 25 years of playing the guitar, I have never owned a P-90 equipped one... until now.

I bought this beautiful cherry red Collings 290 from a member on TGP.  Benn playing the heck out of it since I got it.  I LOVE the fit and finish on this guitar.  Collings have a rep for beautiful craftwork, and this is well borne out here.

I particularly like the thick neck (reminiscent of my JBLP) and the flat, wide fretboard which takes me back to my earlier days of playing classical guitar.

I am finding the P-90s a little too 'polite' at this stage, which is something noted by a few others on the forums.  Perhaps I might upgrade to Lollar P-90s, but maybe not.  I love the clean, chimey tone from the mahogany body, so perhaps I might use this guitar more when I need clean, articulate tones.

Any other Collings owners on here?

I'm pretty sure the 290 has Lollar P90 pickups.

Excellent guitar man!  Audley Freed has been spotted playing a model exactly like that one and lets just say I'm jonesing one myself next year when that piece of crap Honda Odyssey is paid for in my car port.

Congratulations Devan, she's a beauty!

I picked up my Collings I-35 Deluxe about 3 weeks ago and haven't played anything else since.  They are quite remarkable guitars.

Now to answer your P90 question, I have an Epiphone Casino with P90's and to get that growl I either use my Plexi or Fender 57 Twin Reissue.  I also use my Fulltone OCD instead of the tube screamer.

I'm curious, were you impressed with the case?

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Re: NGD - My first P-90 guitar!! (Collings)

Thanks for the kind words everyone - appreciate it ! cool

Ron - I play through either a Mesa/Boogie DC-10 or Mesa/Boogie MkIIC.  Sounds great through those - VERY clear and articulate.  I also have an Axe-FX but haven't tried this guitar through it yet.

wharris & chrisuk - Thanks for the clarification, it indeed has Lollars in it already.  I wonder is Jason might do a 'hotter' variation perhaps?

AD3THREE - I do recall seeing Audley on the promotional page for the 290, but I don't know much about him or his playing.  Would appreciate it if you (or anyone else) could give some tips on albums etc. that showcase his work.

Indy -  I do recall your lovely I-35 being posted on here.  Thanks for the tips on improving the tone.  I do have an OCD and you are correct - it adds the missing 'bite' to the tone that I was looking for.  And I WAS impressed with the Collings case.  Solid piece of work.  Dare I say, a better case than the Gibson Custom Shop one that my JBLP came in! smile

Re: NGD - My first P-90 guitar!! (Collings)

Best thing to do is check out a band called Cry Of Love.  Brother is one of those 90's albums that is the greatest album people have never heard of.  He did that and a short stint in the Black Crows for a few years, mostly Lions album and their live album as well as the Live at the Greek album with Jimmy Page before their first breakup.  He also does a TON of session stuff now in country music.  And he was Peter Framptons 2nd guitarist back in 2009 for his world tour.  He goes to the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam every year and sits in the Christmas Jam allstars band which backs up most of the singers that didn't bring their band.  Cry of love is his best stuff in my opinion.
