latest picture of Joe's board....admiring the simplicity.

ABY switcher, so he's only using two amps...Two DSL's?

Doesn't get much simpler than this (but still awesome):

Joe -> Les Paul -> Jim Kelley 1x12 combo:

Re: Joe keeping it simple

All the blank spots are stuff that doesnt work anymore or has been destroyed by the 30 day fly date tour...... Tonights show was on batteries because the power supply died...  Truth be told... It all sounds better to me as the gizmos go away... Testament to the pedals that survived and the quality of the builds....  Thanks  Jeorge Tripps and Dunlop!!!   Getting closer to the straight in cable rig everyday... Technology and I do not agree at all... Like oil and water....

Great shows in OZ and SE Asia....So stoked on how they went...

Thank goodness the signature pedals survived!

Re: Joe keeping it simple

I think That's the board that used to have the G Lab stuff in it. Was fairly simple in design from the start despite the outlandish capabilities if the g lab delay and reverb units.

I think Dave and I are crossing our fingers the new setup is 2 Marshall majors and 2 4x12s.

Re: Joe keeping it simple

Joe mentioned to us in Adelaide that this was essentially his BCC pedalboard.

I must say, that the reduced pedalboard into 3 plain old Marshalls certainly had a great tone.  I only noticed one failure at the start of a solo, but Joe's tech ran on stage and fixed the problem within 15 seconds.  No one missed a beat.  I'm impressed that he could fix an issue with such a complicated rig so quickly.

I liked in this year's show, there was a lot more change in dynamics in the performance as compared to last year.  I mean in the sense that Joe and the band would deliberately back off the volume in certain passages and then turn it back up to push us back in our seats.  In fact, during his playing of 'Django', I could even hear the natural acoustic plinks of his strings when he rolled the volume back (I was seated in the first row).

In short, I think Joe gets 99.9% of his tone from switching guitars/pickups and utilising the volume/tone knobs.  He only used 3 LPs during his set, and yet his tone never got boring or 'samey'.

True...but it's the vintage talk which is the real deal. Cranked tweed style is good with me too.

Re: Joe keeping it simple

LOL, closer to straight cable to guitar everyday... Brother I'm already there and enjoyed for a few years now.  Its like guitar manufacturers put a volume and tone knob on there for a reason.  Punk and alternative just don't get that.

Re: Joe keeping it simple

I was just comparing this to a picture I took of Joe's board back in '06. That one was very simplified also.

For some reason, I have a feeling the flange will be the next to go. I admire the "bear necessities" philosophy. big_smile I guess this goes back to when Joe was talking about EC plugging his Daphne Blue Strat straight into that tweed twin at RAH.

Actually, the flanger got some heavy use during his Oz shows.  As someone who grew up amongst flanger/chorus soaked pop tunes in the 80's I normally dislike this effect, but thought Joe's use of it on some solos was sublime...

+1

All Joe needs to sound phenomenal is a nice guitar and a decent guitar amp, turned up.

No doubt! I do LOVE those two signature pedals though.

Two Majors would be very cool.

He was only running into 2, the 3rd was there for cosmetic reasons (And a backup!). If you looked at it there was no lead plugged into the left-most DSL head. He was using all 3 cabs though!

Re: Joe keeping it simple

i remember one time going to play a gig and was running late from work and extremely tired.....so i simply loaded up two guitars, amp, cabinet, cables and a tuner and played the show.

two things happened....first it was some of the best fun i ever had a gig and second i think it was probably the best i had ever sounded......no effects, no stomping on pedals or switchers......just pure amp tone and it was a blast.

of course, i never did it again......lol.....but that one time was awesome!!!!!!
