Topic: My First REAL Marshall

YJM 100. OMG, this thing is killer. I've always struggled with the meaning of the term "Headroom".......not anymore.

It actually makes you slow down, especially while playing rhythm, and juice the notes..... that's a good thing.

50 or 100w, the EPA, boost w/noise gate, reverb, it's all here. WHAT A SWEET AMP.

Re: My First REAL Marshall

Nice score. I'd really like to have that amp, clips I've heard are amazing. I swear that thing should emit flames to melt your face when you play it. Indy, another forum member and Ron both have one but haven't heard much about them in here. If I were to sell my other big Marshalls n consolidate, the yjm100 would be my first choice. I love how they, with the advice if Yngwie, kept a classic and simple appearance on the front while putting the extras on the rear.

I yes this head is in my arsenal of tone. A very nice amp indeed. A great rig for studio work. This is one of my many fav amps. Congrats Cheers Ron

Ron, since the Jubilees are the popular choice on here, how would you compare the YJM to the Jubilee? From what I've heard of YJM, it seems to be more of a balls to the wall amp while jubilee comes across as smoother?

Re: My First REAL Marshall

First, apologies in advance for hi-jacking your thread.  I have been looking for a place to share some pictures I took when I got to tour the Marshall factory in the UK last week.  This seems like as good a place as any.  I am not a regular in the gear section so didn't really want to start a whole thread.  Pretty cool place.

Re: My First REAL Marshall

Congrats.... I remember my friend Bob Acquaviva ( he is Dad's partner in the new shop and life long friend) sold me my first 100 super lead Marshall amp... I just got it back..  The volume that it produces and the clarity hook me for life...  Congrats again.... I hear the YJM's are killer..

YEs considering who the YJM is inspired by it is more balls to the wall but it also has unique features such as built in attenuation, noise gate, reverb. Jubilees for me provide a broader palette from clean to mean via guitar volume control. All that being said if I had to limit my gear to say three heads it would be Jubilee, Carol Ann and Twinkleland. The YJM is an AWESOME head but more geared to intense insanity which at times i enjoy. But for the edge blues stuff the three above do the trick. Not sure if this helps .
Cheers Ron

Re: My First REAL Marshall

Congrats! You have a "rip your face off and stomp on it!" Marshall!! They're killer amps for sure. However, if you play a Strat your gonna love the warmth and fatness of a 2555. Works good with humbuckers too!! big_smile

Thanks Ron, yeah I figured the YJM was basically an In Your Face, Take no Prisoners, amp. When the amp was first announced I figured it would be a rather cleaner sounding amp since Yngwie's early tones were much more on the cleaner side than currently. But that thing just seems to roar from what I hear.

Re: My First REAL Marshall

First off, thanks.

Second off, let's not forget that the YJM is basically a 1959 plexi (although with waaaay more to offer) that you can dial down to 50w or lower with the EPA. My tastes are 60's, 70's and early 80's rock (ZEP, UFO, Lizzy, AC/DC, Stones to name but a few) and it is extreamly easy to EQ the amp to those flavors. Yes, you can dial in a rip your face off tone, if you want, but it is in no way a one trick pony.

It's not a one-trick pony simply in that it has an attenuator in it where you can play bedroom levels or a stadium. Sounds versatile in that way. Plus you can jump inputs for different tones... I'd say it's pretty cool!

I did not intend for that to come across that it is a one trick pony. I mentioned all the extras and the statement about the studio use is because of the attenuator. It is a GREAT amp. Yes basically a plexi but still different.
cheers Ron

Re: My First REAL Marshall

These are easily my favorite recent Marshall ..I had the opportunity to play one and would definitely have bought it if I had the spare cash at the time

Re: My First REAL Marshall

I also finally got it...I never understood about Marshall amps and Les Pauls! That is until recently! I always played through a Fender Twin Reverb Silverface. Never liked how my LP sounded, for 30 years or so I had the same guitar and amp. I always blamed the guitar and my playing for not sounding good. Finally, a few years ago I gave the 78 LP to my son who is now 16. He currently plays a lot of Led Zep stuff, through his AC-30. I thought he could use a Marshall, so I bought a MA-50 head, new low end Marshall, I did not buy the cab though. It wasn't in the budget at the moment. So I started to look for a used 1960A, for months on end I studied Craigslist and Ebay for a 1960A that I could afford. Then it happened...I saw a local ad in Craigslist for a Marshall JCM800 and speaker for $500 bucks, no pics or any other info. I put off calling the guy because I thought it was a scam or something. Finally made the call, he told me to come out to see it. And there it was a 1981 JCM800 Master lead 100w 2203 with vertical inputs sitting on top of the original 1960AV cab with greenbacks! He told me the amp didn't work, he was the original owner, and he would take $450 for it. I bought it, took it home and he was right the amp didn't work. Took it apart, found two broken bolts that held ground wires to the chassis, replaced them and HOLY CRAP! My old LP sounds incredible through it! I now understand what that Marshall is about.
